The mathematics demon rearing its head again? Sing away your fears with Kolaveri Di just like the students of Gulmohur High School.
The "soup" song, which was changed into a "maths song" by the principal to add a fun twist to numbers, was hummed by some students at a programme to mark the International Year of Mathematics on Friday.
The Kolaveri Di parody ' "Why this math is very difficult subject. Sometimes there are letters and sometimes object" ' became a huge hit at Horizon, a daylong inter-school activity programme organised by the primary section of the Telco-based cradle.
The event saw the students embracing tables and learning numbers through a host of fun events, which included songs and dance. As many as 14 schools of Jamshedpur took part in it.
Assistant director of Kerala Public School Shanta Vaidyanatham was present as the chief guest.
"Mathematics is a subject that most children dread. This event was organised to tell them that numbers can be fun if they are taught in a proper and innovative way. Everyone took part in the day's events enthusiastically. In fact, the parody of the Kolaveri Di song, to which the students performed, was penned down by our principal Sunita Sinha," said Madhuchhanda Sarkar, a teacher of Gulmohur High School.
Apart from the "maths song", the other highlights of the day were a skit "Fun in Numberland", a quiz, where students fired their grey cells to solve simple mathematical puzzles, and an exhibition where they put up various geometric shapes, currencies and measurements for display and learning.
That is not all.
There was a fancy dress competition too with participants dressing up as numbers to walk the ramp. The guest teachers later took part in Tol Mol Ke Bol, wherein they to guess the weight of a cake and prices of various commodities.
Other events, like Naturomatics, had a number of activities lined up, the best being the creative writing contest that required the students to pen down their thoughts on various shapes found in nature and their importance.
The other were Tanagrams or, in simpler words, Chinese dissection puzzle, which required students to form specific figures with given geometrical shaped papers, Math--Collage and Time Machine. A treasure hunt rounded off things.
"Mathematics is used by everyone in their daily life. Yet the children tend to shy away from it. Since this is the International Year of Mathematics, we decided to put forward the fun side of numbers in front of the students so as to kill their fears right when they are young. Songs and dances, including the Kolaveri Di number was part of the event cause I feel that students often catch on to such things," said Gulmohur High School principal Sunita Sinha.
The educational institutions that took part in Thursday's event included Loyola School, Sacred Heart Convent School, Carmel Junior College, Motilal Nehru Public School, Little Flower School, Hill Top School, Kerala Public School, Kadma; Tarapore School, Agrico; JH Tarapore School, Vidya Bharati Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kerala Samajam Model School, DBMS English School and DBMS Kadma High School.
