ടെക്സ്റ്റ്ബുക്ക് ഓണ്ലൈന് ഇന്ഡന്റ് 2012
2012-13 വര്ഷത്തേക്കാവശ്യമായ സ്കൂള് പാഠപുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ ഓര്ഡര് നല്കുന്നതിന് മുന് വര്ഷങ്ങളിലെ രീതിയില് ഓണ്ലൈന് ഇന്ഡന്റ് സംവിധാനം ഏര്പ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ മുഴുവന് ഗവണ്മെന്റ്/എയിഡഡ് സ്കൂളുകള്ക്കും www.keralabooks.org എന്ന വെബ്സൈറ്റിലെ online text book indent management system എന്ന ലിങ്കില് പ്രവേശിച്ച് തങ്ങള്ക്കാവശ്യമായ പുസ്തകങ്ങളുടെ ക്ളാസ്സ്, ഇനം തിരിച്ച ഓര്ഡര് നല്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇതിനുളള ഗൈഡ്ലൈന്സും സംശയദൂരീകരണത്തിനായുളള ഹെല്പ് ലൈന് നമ്പരുകളും വെബ്സൈറ്റില് നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ മാസം 21-ന് തുടങ്ങി ഡിസംബര് 10-ന് അകം പൂര്ത്തിയാകത്തക്ക രീതിയിലാണ് ഇന്ഡന്റിംഗ് സംവിധാനം ഒരുക്കിയിട്ടുളളത്. സംസ്ഥാനത്തെ എല്ലാ ഗവണ്മെന്റ്/എയിഡഡ് സ്കൂളുകളും ഈ സമയ പരിധിക്കുളളില് തങ്ങളുടെ ആവശ്യകത രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കണം.ഈ വര്ഷം ആറാം പ്രവൃത്തി ദിവസം റോളിലുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണത്തില് ഓരോ ക്ളാസ്സ് കയറ്റി വേണം അടുത്ത വര്ഷത്തെ ആവശ്യകത കണക്കാക്കേണ്ടത്. ഇപ്പോള് ഒന്നാം ക്ളാസ്സില് പഠിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള് അടുത്ത വര്ഷം രണ്ടാം ക്ളാസ്സിലാകും എന്ന രീതിയില് ആവശ്യകത തയ്യാറാക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. മുന് വര്ഷങ്ങളിലെ പരിചയവും യുക്തിയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് വരും വര്ഷത്തെ ഓരോ ക്ളാസ്സിലേയും കുട്ടികളുടെ എണ്ണം മുന്കൂട്ടി കണ്ടുവേണം ഇന്ഡന്റ് നല്കേണ്ടത്.
ഇങ്ങനെ ഓര്ഡര് നല്കുമ്പോള് അറബി, ഉര്ദു, സംസ്കൃതം എന്നീ ഭാഷകള് പഠിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടികള്ക്കായി പ്രസ്തുത വിഷയങ്ങളുടെ ഓര്ഡര് നല്കാന് പ്രത്യേകം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണം. 5 മുതല് 10 വരെ ക്ളാസ്സുകളില് അറബി, സംസ്കൃതം ഓറിയന്റല് പുസ്തകങ്ങള് നിലവിലുണ്ട്. ഒന്നും രണ്ടും ഭാഷകള്ക്കു പകരം അറബി, സംസ്കൃതം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ചുരുക്കം ചില ഓറിയന്റല് സ്കൂളുകളിലെ കുട്ടികള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി മാത്രമുളളതാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകങ്ങള്. സാധാരണ സ്കൂളുകളിലെ കുട്ടികള് ഈ ഓറിയന്റല് പുസ്തകങ്ങള് പഠിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല. അതിനാല് ഇന്ഡന്റ് ഫോമിലെ Arabic (OS), Sanskrit (OS) എന്നിവ അക്കാഡമിക് സ്കൂളുകളിലെ കുട്ടികള്ക്കായി ഓര്ഡര് ചെയ്യാതിരിക്കാന് പ്രത്യേകം ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണം.
എല്ലാ ഉപജില്ലാ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആഫീസര്മാരും തങ്ങളുടെ മേഖലയിലെ ഹൈസ്കൂളുകള് ഉള്പ്പെടെയുളള മുഴുവന് സ്കൂളുകളും കൃത്യമായി ഓര്ഡര് നല്കി എന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തണം. ജില്ലാ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആഫീസര് മേല്പ്പറഞ്ഞ സമയപരിധിയില് വിവിധ സ്കൂളുകളില് നേരിട്ട് പരിശോധന നടത്തുകയും ഇന്ഡന്റിംഗ് കൃത്യമായി ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് ഉറപ്പുവരുത്തുകയും വേണം.
ഓരോ ഉപജില്ലയിലേയും എല്ലാ പ്രഥമ അധ്യാപകരുടേയും യോഗം വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആഫീസര് ഡിസംബര് 8-ന് അകം വിളിച്ചു ചേര്ത്ത് ഇന്ഡന്റിംഗിലെ പുരോഗതിയും വിശ്വാസ്യതയും ഉറപ്പു വരുത്തണം. ഇതു സംബന്ധിച്ച മേല്നോട്ടം ജില്ലാ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആഫീസറും ഉപഡയറക്ടറും യഥാവിധി കൈക്കൊളളുകയും വേണം.
കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്ഷം സ്വീകരിച്ച അതേ രീതിയില് തന്നെ ഇപ്രാവശ്യവും ഓണ്ലൈന് ഇന്ഡന്റ് നല്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട മാര്ഗ്ഗ നിര്ദ്ദേശങ്ങള് പൂര്ണ്ണമായും മനസ്സിലാക്കുന്നതിനും അവ താഴേക്ക് പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനുമായി എല്ലാ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ആഫീസര്മാര്ക്കും വരുന്ന ആഴ്ചയില് സീമാറ്റിന്റെ ആഭിമുഖ്യത്തില് ദ്വിദിന പരിശീലനം നല്കുന്നതാണ്. ഇതു സംബന്ധിച്ച അറിയിപ്പ് പിന്നാലെ നല്കും. അണ് എയിഡഡ് സ്കൂളുകള്ക്കായി പ്രത്യേക ഓണ്ലൈന് സംവിധാനം പിന്നീട് ഏര്പ്പെടുത്തുമെന്നതിനാല് ഈ സര്ക്കുലറിലെ നിര്ദ്ദേശങ്ങള് അണ്എയിഡഡ് സ്കൂളുകള്ക്ക് ബാധകമല്ല.

മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് : തിരിച്ചറിവുണ്ടാകാന് രക്തസാക്ഷികള് വേണമെന്നോ?
കേരളത്തിലെ മൂന്നരക്കോടിക്ക് മേലെ വരുന്ന ജനങ്ങളില് എത്രപേര് തങ്ങളില് പലരുടേയും അന്തകനാകാന് സാദ്ധ്യതയുള്ള മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് ഡാമിനെപ്പറ്റിയും അതിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അവസ്ഥയെപ്പറ്റിയും ബോധവാന്മാരാണ്? ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിനും കാര്യമായൊന്നും അറിയില്ല എന്ന് തന്നെ വേണം കരുതാന്. ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് മലയാളികളുടെ തലയ്ക്ക് മുകളില് ഡെമോക്ലസ്സിന്റെ വാള് പോലെ മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് തൂങ്ങിയാടാന് തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് കാലം കുറേയാകുന്നു. നിര്മ്മാണ കാലത്ത് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ അണക്കെട്ട് ഇതായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും, ചുണ്ണാമ്പും സുര്ക്കി മിശ്രിതവും കരിങ്കല്ലുമൊക്കെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചുണ്ടാക്കിയ 113 വര്ഷത്തിലധികം പഴക്കമുള്ള മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് അണക്കെട്ടാണ് ഇന്ന് ലോകത്തിലുള്ളതില് ഏറ്റവും പഴക്കമുള്ള ഭൂഗുരുത്വ അണക്കെട്ട്. 2009 ല് ബൂലോകത്തെ പ്രമുഖ സഞ്ചാരസാഹിത്യകാരനായ നിരക്ഷരന് എഴുതിയ ലേഖനം വായിക്കൂ. മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് പ്രശ്നത്തെക്കുറിച്ച് വ്യക്തമായ ഒരു ധാരണയുണ്ടാക്കാന് ഈ ലേഖനം നിങ്ങളെ സഹായിക്കും. തമിഴന് രാഷ്ട്രീയം മറന്ന് നാടിനു വേണ്ടി ഒരുമിക്കുമ്പോള്, സ്വതസിദ്ധമായ നിസ്സംഗത വെടിയാന്, മലയാളിയുടെ പ്രതിഷേധത്തിന്റെ ഗൗരവം തിരിച്ചറിയാന്, ഈ ലേഖനം സഹായിക്കും. രാഷ്ട്രീയഭേദമന്യേ ഈ പ്രശ്നം ഏറ്റെടുക്കാന്, ക്ലാസ് മുറികള് അന്വേഷണാത്മകമനോഭാവമുള്ള നമ്മുടെ കുട്ടികള്ക്കു മുന്നില് നിശബ്ദരാകാതിരിക്കാന് അധ്യാപകസമൂഹത്തിന് മുന്നില് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് പ്രശ്നവും ചരിത്രവും സമര്പ്പിക്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം അതിന്റെ വീഡിയോയും. മുഴങ്ങട്ടെ, നമ്മുടെ പ്രതിഷേധം. അലയടിക്കട്ടെ, അതിര്ത്തികള് കടന്ന്.. നമ്മുടെ ശബ്ദം.1896 ല് ഈ അണക്കെട്ട് നിര്മ്മാണം പൂര്ത്തിയാക്കിയ കാലത്ത്, 50 കൊല്ലത്തിലധികം ഇത്തരം അണക്കെട്ടുകള്ക്ക് ആയുസ്സില്ലെന്ന് അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ശില്പ്പിയായ പെന്നി ക്വിക്ക് എന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാരന് തന്നെ പറയുന്നുണ്ട്. അങ്ങനെ നോക്കിയാല്പ്പോലും സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന് മുന്നേ തന്നെ അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ കാലാവധി കഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. സായിപ്പ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ അണക്കെട്ടായതുകൊണ്ട് മാത്രമാണ് പിന്നെയും 63 കൊല്ലമായി അതിങ്ങനെ പൊട്ടാതെ നില്ക്കുന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടുകാര് ആരെങ്കിലുമാണ് ഡാമുണ്ടാക്കിയതെങ്കില് ഇതിനോടകം മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് അണക്കെട്ട് ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ പ്ലാറ്റിനം ജ്യൂബിലി മലയാളികള് ആഘോഷിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടാകുമായിരുന്നു.
കേരളത്തിലാണ് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് ഡാം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതെങ്കിലും തമിഴ്നാടാണ് ഡാമിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥര്. അക്കഥകളൊക്കെ പറയാന് പോയാല് മണ്ടത്തരങ്ങളുടെ സര്ദാര്ജിക്കഥ പരമ്പര പോലെ കേട്ടിരുന്ന് ചിരിക്കാനുള്ള വകയുണ്ട്.
ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് ഭരണകാലത്ത് തേനി, മദുര, ദിണ്ടിക്കല്, രാമനാഥപുരം എന്നീ തമിഴ് പ്രവിശ്യകള് ജലക്ഷാമം അനുഭവിക്കുമ്പോള് പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിനിപ്പുറമുള്ള കേരളത്തിലെ പെരിയാര് തീരങ്ങളില് പലപ്പോഴും വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കമായിരുന്നു. ഇതിന് സായിപ്പ് കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച പ്രതിവിധിയാണ് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് അണക്കെട്ട്. പെരിയാര് നദിയിലെ വെള്ളം അണകെട്ടി പശ്ചിമഘട്ടം തുരന്ന് മധുരയിലൂടെ ഒഴുകുന്ന വൈഗൈ നദിയിലെത്തിക്കാനിട്ട പദ്ധതിയാണ് ഇന്നിപ്പോള് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് ഡാം എന്ന തലവേദനയായി മലയാളിയുടെ ഉറക്കം കെടുത്തുന്നത്.
1886 ഒക്ടോബര് 29ന് പെരിയാര് പാട്ടക്കരാര് പ്രകാരം പെരിയാര് നദിയുടെ 155 അടി ഉയരത്തില് സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന 8000 ഏക്കര് സ്ഥലത്തിന് പുറമെ അണക്കെട്ട് നിര്മ്മാണത്തിനായി 100 ഏക്കര് സ്ഥലവും തിരുവിതാംകൂര് രാജാവായിരുന്ന വിശാഖം തിരുനാള് രാമവര്മ്മ അന്നത്തെ മദിരാശി സര്ക്കാറിന് പാട്ടമായി നല്കുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. കരാറുപ്രകാരം പാട്ടത്തുകയായി ഏക്കറിന് 5 രൂപയെന്ന കണക്കില് 40,000 രൂപ വര്ഷം തോറും കേരളത്തിന് ലഭിക്കും. 50 വര്ഷം മാത്രം ആയുസ്സ് കണക്കാക്കിയിരുന്ന ഡാമിന്റെ കരാര് കാലയളവ് 999 വര്ഷമാണെന്നുള്ളതാണ് വിരോധാഭാസം. ആദ്യകരാര് കഴിയുമ്പോള് വേണമെങ്കില് വീണ്ടുമൊരു 999 വര്ഷത്തേക്ക് കരാര് പുതുക്കുന്നതിന് വിരോധമൊന്നും ഇല്ലെന്നുള്ള മറ്റൊരു മണ്ടത്തരവും കൂടെ കരാറിലുണ്ട്.
അണക്കെട്ടില് ചോര്ച്ചയും മറ്റും വരാന് തുടങ്ങിയതോടെയായിരിക്കണം അണക്കെട്ട് ദുര്ബ്ബലമാണെന്നും ജലനിരപ്പ് 136 അടിക്ക് മുകളില് ഉയര്ത്താന് പറ്റില്ലെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് കേരളവും തമിഴ്നാടും തമ്മിലുള്ള നിയമ യുദ്ധങ്ങള് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. (ഇതിന് പിന്നില് മറ്റെന്തെങ്കിലും രാഷ്ട്രീയം ഉണ്ടോയെന്നറിയില്ല.) ഡാം പൊട്ടിയാലും തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലേക്ക് വെള്ളമൊഴുകി അവര്ക്ക് അപകടം ഒന്നുമുണ്ടാകില്ല എന്നതുകൊണ്ട് കിട്ടുന്നിടത്തോളം കാലം വെള്ളം ഊറ്റാനാണ് തമിഴ്നാടിന്റെ പദ്ധതി. ഡാം പൊട്ടിയാല് 35 കിലോമീറ്റര് താഴെയുള്ള ഇടുക്കി ഡാം ആ വെള്ളം മുഴുവന് താങ്ങിക്കോളും എന്നുള്ള മുടന്തന് ന്യായങ്ങളും തമിഴ്നാട് സര്ക്കാര് നിരത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇടുക്കി ഡാം അല്ലാതെ തന്നെ നിറഞ്ഞുകവിയാറുണ്ടെന്നും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിലെ വെള്ളം കൂടെ താങ്ങാന് ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിന് ആകില്ലെന്നുമുള്ളത് പകല് പോലെ വ്യക്തമായ കാര്യമാണ്. ഇനി അഥവാ ഇടുക്കി ഡാം ഈ വെള്ളം മുഴുവന് താങ്ങിയാലും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിനും ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിനും ഇടയില് പെരിയാര് തീരത്ത് താമസിക്കുന്ന പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവന് ഒരു വിലയുമില്ലേ ?
ആയുസ്സെത്തിയ അണക്കെട്ടെങ്ങാനും പൊട്ടിയാലുള്ള അവസ്ഥയെപ്പറ്റി ചിന്തിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങിയാല് അഞ്ചാറ് ജില്ലകളിലെ ജനങ്ങള്ക്ക് മനസ്സമാധാനത്തോടെ റോഡിലിറങ്ങാനും പറ്റില്ല, വീട്ടിലിരിക്കാനും പറ്റില്ല. ഇടുക്കിയിലുള്ള ഒരു ബ്ലോഗ് സുഹൃത്ത് ഈയിടയ്ക്ക് എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു അദ്ദേഹം തെങ്ങ് കയറ്റം പഠിക്കാന് പോകുകയാണെന്ന്. തെങ്ങ് കയറ്റം പഠിക്കുന്നത് നല്ലതാണ്. തെങ്ങുകയറ്റത്തൊഴിലാളി ക്ഷാമം നേരിടുന്ന ഇക്കാലത്ത് കുറച്ച് കാലം തേങ്ങയിടാന് മറ്റാരേയും ആശ്രയിക്കേണ്ടി വരില്ല എന്നല്ലാതെ, ഡാം പൊട്ടുന്ന സമയത്ത് തെങ്ങില്ക്കയറി രക്ഷപ്പെടാമെന്നൊന്നും ആരും കരുതേണ്ട. എറണാകുളത്ത് ഹൈക്കോര്ട്ട് കെട്ടിടത്തിന്റെ നാലാം നിലയില് വരെ വെള്ളം കയറുമെന്നാണ് കണക്കാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. അപ്പോള്പ്പിന്നെ ഇടുക്കിയിലുള്ള തെങ്ങിന്റെ മണ്ടയില്ക്കയറി രക്ഷപെടാമെന്നുള്ളത് വ്യാമോഹം മാത്രമല്ലേ ?
അപകടം എന്തെങ്കിലും പിണഞ്ഞാല്, കണക്കുകള് സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതു് ശരിയാണെങ്കില് ഇടുക്കി, കോട്ടയം, പത്തനംതിട്ട, എറണാകുളം, തൃശൂര്, ആലപ്പുഴ എന്നീ ജില്ലകളിലായി കുറഞ്ഞത് 40 ലക്ഷം ജനങ്ങളെങ്കിലും ചത്തൊടുങ്ങും. പണ്ഢിതനും, പാമരനും, പണമുള്ളവനും, പണമില്ലാത്തവനും, സിനിമാക്കാരനും, രാഷ്ട്രീയക്കാരനും, കേന്ദ്രത്തില്പ്പിടിയുള്ളവനും, പിടില്ലാത്തവനും, കുട്ടികളും, വലിയവരുമെല്ലാമടക്കമുള്ള ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് മനുഷ്യാത്മാക്കള് വീട്ടിലും, റോട്ടിലും, പാടത്തും, പറമ്പിലുമൊക്കെയായി ചത്തുമലക്കും. കുറേയധികം പേര് ആര്ക്കും ബുദ്ധിമൊട്ടൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാക്കാതെ അറബിക്കടലിന്റെ അഗാധതയില് സമാധിയാകും. കന്നുകാലികള് അടക്കമുള്ള മിണ്ടാപ്രാണികളുടെ കണക്കൊന്നും മുകളില്പ്പറഞ്ഞ 40 ലക്ഷത്തില് പെടുന്നില്ല.
കെട്ടിടങ്ങള്ക്കുള്ളിലും വാഹനങ്ങളിലുമൊക്കെയായി കുടുങ്ങിക്കിടക്കുന്ന ഇത്രയുമധികം ശവശരീരങ്ങള് 24 മണിക്കൂറിനകം കണ്ടെടുത്ത് ശരിയാംവണ്ണം മറവുചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കില്, ജീവനോടെ അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന ബാക്കിയുള്ള മനുഷ്യജന്മങ്ങള് പകര്ച്ചവ്യാധികളും, മറ്റ് രോഗങ്ങളും പിടിച്ചു് നരകിച്ചു് ചാകും. ഇക്കൂട്ടത്തില് മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിന്റെ പേരില് പടനയിക്കുന്ന തമിഴനും, ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിനുണ്ടാകും. നദീജലം നഷ്ടമായതുകൊണ്ട് തേനി, മധുര, ദിണ്ടിക്കല് , രാമനാഥപുരം എന്നിങ്ങനെ കൃഷിയെ മാത്രം ആശ്രയിച്ച് കഴിയുന്ന പതിനായിരക്കണക്കിന് തമിഴ് മക്കള് വരള്ച്ചയും പട്ടിണിയും കൊണ്ട് വലയും. ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധി കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട സമയത്ത് സര്ദാര്ജിമാര്ക്ക് നേരെ പൊതുജനം ആക്രമണം അഴിച്ചുവിട്ടതുപൊലെ കണ്മുന്നില് വന്നുപെടുന്ന തമിഴന്മാരോട് മലയാളികള് വികാരപ്രകടനം വല്ലതും നടത്തുകയും അതേ നാണയത്തില് തമിഴ് മക്കള് പ്രതികരിക്കുകയും ചെയ്താല് ഒരു വംശീയകലാപംതന്നെ രാജ്യത്ത് പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ടെന്ന് വരും.
ഇതെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും അവശേഷിക്കുന്ന മലയാളിയും, തമിഴനും, ഈ ദാരുണസംഭവത്തിന്റെ പഴി അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും, ചാരി, വീണ്ടും കാലം കഴിക്കും. ഒരു രാജാവിന് പറ്റിയ അബദ്ധം നാളിത്ര കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും തിരുത്താനാകാതെ പ്രജകളെ പരിപാലിക്കുന്നെന്ന പേരില് നികുതിപ്പണം തിന്നുകുടിച്ച് സുഖിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞുപോകുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാരേയും അവരുടെ പിണിയാളുകളേയും നാമൊക്കെ പിന്നെയും പിന്നെയും വന് ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് തലസ്ഥാനത്തേക്കും കേന്ദ്രത്തിലേക്കും അയച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. ആ രാഷ്ടീയവിഷജീവികളൊക്കെയും ഇടതും, വലതും, കളിച്ചു്, വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും, മാറി മാറി മലയാളസമൂഹത്തെയൊന്നാകെ കൊള്ളയടിക്കും.
1979 ആഗസ്റ്റ് 11ന് കനത്ത മഴയില് ഗുജറാത്തിലെ മോര്വി ഡാം തകര്ന്നപ്പോള് ഉണ്ടായതാണ് സ്വതന്ത്ര ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഡാം ദുരന്തം. 20 മിനിറ്റിനകം 15,000ത്തോളം ജനങ്ങളാണ് അന്ന് മോര്വി പട്ടണത്തില് മണ്ണോട് ചേര്ന്നത്.
രണ്ടാഴ്ച്ച മുന്പ് അതിശക്തമായ മഴകാരണം തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ ആളിയാര് ഡാം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള് പാലക്കാട്ടെ മൂലത്തറ റെഗുലേറ്റര് തകര്ന്ന് വിലപ്പെട്ട മനുഷ്യജീവനൊപ്പം 50 കോടിയില്പ്പരം രൂപയുടെ നാശനഷ്ടങ്ങളാണുണ്ടായത്.
2006 ആഗസ്റ്റില് കനത്തമഴകാരണം രാജസ്ഥാനിലെ ബജാജ് സാഗര് ഡാമിലെ അധിക ജലം തുറന്ന് വിട്ടപ്പോള് ഉണ്ടായ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ ബാക്കിപത്രങ്ങള് കുറേനാളുകള്ക്ക് ശേഷമാണെങ്കിലും നേരില് കാണാന് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുള്ള ഒരാളാണ് ഞാന്. അവിടെ പലയിടത്തും വെള്ളം ഇരച്ചുകയറിയതു് രാത്രിയായതുകൊണ്ടു് ഗ്രാമവാസികളില് പലരും ഉറക്കത്തില്ത്തന്നെ മുങ്ങിമരിച്ചു. നൂറുകണക്കിനു് കന്നുകാലികളും, മിണ്ടാപ്രാണികളും ചത്തൊടുങ്ങി. ഭൂപ്രകൃതിയിലുള്ള പ്രത്യേകത കാരണം മാസങ്ങളോളം ഈ വെള്ളം താഴ്ന്ന പ്രദേശങ്ങളില് കെട്ടിക്കിടന്നു് ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുണ്ടാക്കി. തൊട്ടടുത്ത സംസ്ഥാനമായ ഗുജറാത്തിലും ഈ ഡാമില് നിന്നൊഴുകിയ വെള്ളം ഒരുപാടു് നാശങ്ങള് വിതച്ചു. ഗുജറാത്തിലെ രക്ഷാപ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളില് പങ്കെടുത്ത മുന്സൈനികനും ഹെലിക്കോപ്റ്റര് പൈലറ്റുമായ എന്റെ അമ്മാവന് ക്യാപ്റ്റന് മോഹന്റെ അടുക്കല് നിന്ന് ആ ദുരന്തത്തിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ഭീകരമുഖം മനസ്സിലാക്കാനും എനിക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഇതൊക്കെക്കൊണ്ടാകാം 2 കൊല്ലത്തിലധികമായി, എന്നും മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാറിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വാര്ത്തകള്ക്ക് ഞാന് കാതോര്ക്കുന്നത് ഒരു ഉള്ക്കിടിലത്തോടെ മാത്രമാണ്.
മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം എന്നത് അധികാരക്കസേരകളില് ഇരിക്കുന്ന മഹാന്മാര്ക്കൊക്കെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞോ ? അണക്കെട്ടിന്റെ ആയുസ്സിന്റെ 20 ഇരട്ടിയേക്കാളധികം കാലത്തേക്ക് അതില് നിന്ന് അയല് സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന് വെള്ളം കൊടുക്കാമെന്നുള്ള കരാറിന് കൂട്ടുനിന്ന രാജാവിനും, (രാജാവിനെ സായിപ്പ് നിര്ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ച് സമ്മതിപ്പിച്ചതാണെന്നുള്ളത് വിസ്മരിക്കുന്നില്ല.) ആ കരാര്പ്രകാരം ഇനിയും മുന്നോട്ട് പോയാല് ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് പ്രജകള് ചത്തടിയുമെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിട്ടും രാഷ്ട്രീയം കളിക്കുന്ന മന്ത്രിമാര്ക്കും, മനുഷ്യത്ത്വം തൊട്ട് തീണ്ടിയിട്ടില്ലേ ?
സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളുടെ രണ്ടിന്റേയും കേസ് കോടതിയിലിട്ട് തട്ടിക്കളിക്കുന്ന സുപ്രീം കോടതി എന്ന് പറയുന്ന പരമോന്നത നീതിന്യായ വ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് പിന്നിലുള്ളത് മനുഷ്യന്മാര് തന്നെയല്ല എന്നുണ്ടോ ? ഇതെന്താ പിടികിട്ടാപ്പുള്ളിയോ, തെളിവില്ലാതെ കിടക്കുന്ന കേസോ മറ്റോ ആണോ ഇങ്ങനെ നീട്ടിനീട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകാന്? അടുത്ത ഹിയറിങ്ങ് ഇനി ജനുവരിയിലാണ് പോലും! രണ്ട് കൂട്ടര്ക്കും 9 ദിവസം വീതം വേണമത്രേ കേസ് വാദിച്ച് തീര്ക്കാന്.
ഈ കേസ് തീര്പ്പാക്കാന് എന്താണിത്ര കാലതാമസം ? ഇതിനേക്കാള് വലിയ ഏത് കേസാണ് സുപ്രീം കോടതിയില് അടിയന്തിരമായി തീരുമാനം കാത്തുകിടക്കുന്നത് ? എന്തോന്നാണ് ഇത്ര വാദിക്കാന് ? ഡാമിലെ വെള്ളം കുറച്ച് ദിവസമെടുത്തിട്ടായാലും, ആളപായമില്ലാത്ത രീതിയില് ഒന്ന് തുറന്ന് വിട്ട് ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അതിന്റെ ശോചനീയാവസ്ഥ മനസ്സിലാക്കാന് സുപ്രീം കോടതിക്ക് ഒരു ശ്രമം നടത്തി നോക്കിക്കൂടെ ? ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ ജീവന് അപകടത്തിലാകുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു കേസാകുമ്പോള് കോടതി നേരിട്ടിടപെട്ട് അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്യുന്നതില് എന്താണ് തെറ്റ് എന്ന് മാത്രമേ നിയമമറിയാത്ത സാധാരണക്കാരനായ എനിക്ക് ചിന്തിക്കാനാകുന്നുള്ളൂ.

എമര്ജന്സി ആക്ഷന് പ്ലാന് (E.A.P.)എന്ന അറ്റ കൈയ്യെക്കുറിച്ച് ചര്ച്ചകള് നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. അണക്കെട്ട് പൊട്ടിയാല് പ്രധാനമായും ചെയ്യാനുള്ള രക്ഷാപ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളാണ് ഇപ്പറഞ്ഞ ആക്ഷന് പ്ലാന്. എന്തൊക്കെ പ്ലാന് ചെയ്താലും എത്രയൊക്കെ നടപ്പിലാക്കാന് പറ്റും ഈ മലവെള്ളപ്പാച്ചിലിനിടയില് ?! എത്രപേരുടെ ജീവനും സ്വത്തും രക്ഷിക്കാനാകും പ്രളയജലം പൊങ്ങിപ്പൊങ്ങി വരുന്നതിനിടയ്ക്ക് ? തിക്കിനും തിരക്കിനുമിടയില് എല്ലാം വെള്ളത്തില് വരച്ച വര മാത്രമേ ആകൂ.
കാര്യങ്ങളുടെ പോക്ക് കണ്ടിട്ട് ദൈവത്തിനല്ലാതെ മറ്റാര്ക്കും കേരളത്തെ രക്ഷിക്കാന് കഴിയുമെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നില്ല. അങ്ങേര്ക്ക് വേണമെങ്കില് രക്ഷിക്കട്ടെ. അങ്ങേരുടെ സ്വന്തം നാടല്ലേ എന്നതാണ് അവസ്ഥ !
ഒരപകടവും സംഭവിക്കരുതേ എന്ന് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കുന്ന സമയത്തും, അഥവാ അങ്ങനെയെന്തെങ്കിലും സംഭവിച്ചാല്ത്തന്നെ ഞാന് എന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ നാട്ടിലുള്ളപ്പോള് മാത്രം അത് സംഭവിച്ചാല് മതിയെന്നും ഞാന് പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കുന്നു. എന്തുവന്നാലും ഒരുമിച്ച് നേരിടാമല്ലോ ? അതല്പ്പം സ്വാര്ത്ഥതയാകാം, പക്ഷെ എനിക്കങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിക്കാനും പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കാനുമേ ഈയവസരത്തില് ആകുന്നുള്ളൂ, ക്ഷമിക്കുക.
പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കാനല്ലാതെ നമ്മള് ജനത്തിന് എന്താണ് ചെയ്യാനാകുക ? തമിഴനെ ആക്രമിച്ച് കീഴടക്കി ഡാം തുറന്ന് വിട്ട് ജയിലില് പോകണോ ? അതോ കോടതി വിധി വരുന്നതുവരെ പ്രാണഭയത്തോടെ ജീവിക്കണോ ? അതുമല്ലെങ്കില് ഇതുപോലെ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ സ്വന്തം ദൈന്യത പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചാല് മതിയോ ?
നൂറുകണക്കിന് ആളെ കൊന്നൊടുക്കിയ വിദേശ തീവ്രവാദിക്ക് 31 കോടി ചിലവില് താമസവും, ഭക്ഷണവും, പാതുകാപ്പും, വക്കീലും, വിളിപ്പുറത്ത് വൈദ്യസഹായവുമെല്ലാം കൊടുക്കുന്ന രാജ്യത്ത്, ഒരക്രമവും കാണിക്കാതെ നിയമം അനുശാസിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ മാന്യമായി ജീവിക്കുന്ന ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങള്ക്ക് നേരാംവണ്ണം ഭക്ഷണവും വെള്ളവും വെളിച്ചവും ജീവസുരക്ഷയും ഒന്നുമില്ല.
ഒന്ന് മാത്രം മനസ്സിലാക്കുക. രാഷ്ട്രീയവും കോടതിയുമൊക്കെ കളിച്ച് കളിച്ച് എന്തെങ്കിലും കുഴപ്പങ്ങള് വരുത്തിവെക്കാനാണ് അധികാരി വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിന്റെ ഭാവമെങ്കില് ലോകം കണ്ടതില് വെച്ച് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഒരു ദുരന്തത്തിനവര് സമാധാനം പറയേണ്ടി വരും. അവരിലൊന്നിനെപ്പോലും റോഡിലിറങ്ങി നടക്കാന് ബാക്കി വരുന്ന കേരളജനത അനുവദിച്ചെന്ന് വരില്ല. പേപ്പട്ടികളെ നേരിടുന്ന ലാഘവത്തോടെ തെരുവില് ജനങ്ങളവരെ കല്ലെറിഞ്ഞുവീഴ്ത്തും. ഉറ്റവനും ഉടയവനും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് മനസ്സിന്റെ സമനില തെറ്റി നില്ക്കേണ്ടി വന്നേക്കാവുന്ന ലക്ഷക്കണക്കിന് ജനങ്ങളുടെ വികാരത്തിന് മാത്രം വില പറയരുത്.

Alan Turing ( represents the team that ) decisively changed the course of World War II. He is among the greatest scientists of the 20th century, if not all times. Alan Turing is the inventor of computers, programming and artificial intelligence. All the computers in operation today, including the billions of smartphones are in fact Turing Machines, the computer Turing invented conceptuallly. His thoughts were revolutionary. Computers in his days, were people. People, computing.
The British of today are working hard on clearing their conscience on how they treated Alan Turing. In 2009 Gordon Brown said that "he is sorry for the "appalling" way World War II code-breaker Alan Turing was treated for being gay." And now there is this documentary called "Britain's greatest codebreaker" based on the biography of Turing and sessions Turing had with a psychiatrist in Manchester, Franz Greenbaum.
In my opinion Alan Turing could only have flourished in Britain because of his eccentricity. What would have happened with Turing if he had to work at a patent-office like Einstein? Asa Briggs, one of the codebreakers at Bletchley Park mentioned that Turing often came to work with his pajamas under his jacket. That described the culture in that group, I suppose. One of the most important things in Turings private life was the loss of his best friend, the love of his. He never got over it although in Bletchley Park he became friends with a woman, the only woman codebreaker on the team. He even proposed to marry her but Turing called it off, because he wanted to live an honest life. That was his first mistake...
His second mistake was going to the police and accusing a male prostitute of stealing 50 pounds. The police did not care about the 50 pound robbery at all, they could book a professor for gross indecency. Turing now lived in a world where, it seems, nothing out of the ordinary was accepted. Society really wanted him. His sentence was that he could choose prison or enforced body change. He chose the body change, which was an experimental chemical castration. His security privileges were removed as well, meaning he could not continue to work for the UK Government Communications Headquarters. The drug, a synthetic version of female hormones, had a catastrophic effect on his body.
Alan Turing sadly ended his life in 1954.

ജ്യാമിതിയും ബീജഗണിതവും
ഭൗതിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങള്ക്ക് ഗണിതപരിഹാരം കാണുന്നതിന് ജ്യാമിതീയരീതി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് സര്വ്വസാധാരണമാണ്. പത്താംക്ലാസിലെ പാഠപുസ്തകത്തില് 'ജ്യാമിതിയും ബീജഗണിതവും' എന്ന പാഠഭാഗത്തിന്റെ സൈഡ്ബോക്സില് നിറഞ്ഞുനില്ക്കുന്നതും ഇതുതന്നെയാണ്. ഗണിതചിന്തകളുടെ പ്രായോഗികത നിറഞ്ഞുനില്ക്കുന്ന ഭൗതികശാസ്ത്രം രസതന്ത്രം എന്നിവയുടെ പഠനത്തിലും ആസ്വാദനത്തിലും ചിട്ടയായ ഗണിതപഠനം അനിവാര്യമത്രേ. ചലനസമവാക്യങ്ങള് ജ്യാമിതീയമായി തെളിയിക്കുകയും ഒപ്പം ജ്യാമിതിയും ബീജഗണിതവും എന്ന പാഠഭാഗത്തുനിന്ന് പരിശീലനചോദ്യങ്ങള് നല്കുകയുമാണ് ഈ പോസ്റ്റിന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം. പോസ്റ്റിനൊടുവില് പരിശീലനചോദ്യങ്ങളുടെ പി.ഡി.എഫ് ഫയല് നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
x സൂചകാക്ഷത്തില് സമയവും y സൂചകാക്ഷത്തില് പ്രവേഗവും(velocity) എടുത്തുകൊണ്ടാണ് പ്രവേഗ-സമയ ഗ്രാഫ് (velocity-time graph)വരക്കുന്നത് . പ്രവേഗസമയ ഗ്രാഫിന്റെ ചരിവ് ത്വരണമായിരിക്കും(acceleration). $t_1$ സമയത്തിലെ പ്രവേഗം $v_1$ , $t_2$ സമയത്തിലെ പ്രവേഗം $v_2$ആയാല് $\frac{v_2-v_1}{t_2-t_1}$എന്നത് ത്വരണമാണ്. നേര്രേഖയില് സമാനത്വരണത്തോടെ(uniform acceleration) സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു വസ്തുവിന്റെ ചലനം പരിഗണിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വരക്കുന്ന v-t ഗ്രാഫ് ഒരു നേര്രേഖയായിരിക്കും. x അക്ഷത്തിനു സമാന്തരമായ നേര്രേഖയുടെ പ്രസക്തി അതിന്റെ ചരിവ് (slope)പൂജ്യമാണെന്നതാണ് . അതായത് ത്വരണം പൂജ്യമായ ചലനത്തെ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നതാണ്. കുറച്ചുകൂടി വ്യക്തമായി പറഞ്ഞാല് ഇത് സമാനചലനത്തിന്റെ പ്രവേഗ-സമയ ഗ്രാഫാണ്.
ഇനി താഴെ കൊടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ഗ്രാഫ് നോക്കാം. ഇവിടെ AB എന്ന വര സമാനത്വരണത്തോടെ ചലിക്കുന്ന വസ്തുവിന്റെ V-T ഗ്രാഫാണ് .ഈ വര സമയ അക്ഷവുമായി(axis) ചേര്ന്നുണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഒരു ലംബകം (trapezium)കാണാം. ഈ ലംബകത്തിന്റെ പരപ്പളവാണ്(area) വസ്തു സഞ്ചരിച്ച ദൂരം അഥവാ സ്ഥാനാന്തരം (distance or displacement). ഈ പരപ്പളവ് നമുക്ക് കണക്കാക്കാം. ചില ബിന്ദുക്കളുടെ സൂചകസംഖ്യകള്(coordinates) എഴുതിയിരിക്കുന്നത് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക.

OK, what is the status It's in the technical design phase. Graphica is a 3D scene graph language, ( the first version of ) the Graphica compiler generates Mathematica source code that will be handled by Mathematica ( another target to compile to could be Java/jReality for example ). I am at the point of studying the theory behind compilers and the selection of tools, candidates I have pre-selected are:
- ANTLR,
- javaCC,
- jparsec and
- an all handcrafted option.
More options may pop-up while studying though. I selected four books to study:
- (1) Modern compiler implementation in Java, A.Appel, CUP 2004
- (2) Programming Language Processors in Java, D.Watt, D.Brown, Prentice Hall 2000
- (3) ANT LR Reference, Terence Parr, Pragmatic Bookshelf 2007
- (4) Compilers, PT&T, Aho, et al, Pearson 2007
Title (4) is aka the Dragon book and supposedly is the best book on the subject, I'll use that as a glossary. Title (1) supports a javaCC approach, and develops MiniJava, a subset of Java, (2) builds a compiler and interpreter for a language called Triangle ( with Java ). I already downloaded the source, created a project for it in NetBeans and tested a few compiles and runs of a Triangle program which is a Pascal type of language. Several bugs have been reported over the years which I have collected and should fix. Title (3) is clearly pro ANTLR. And (4) is the authoritative reference. Some of the books may seem old but I used a list from a 2010 university syllabus.
I'll have to solve one other issue on the Mathematica side of the project, and that is how to remotely create a Notebook using a kernel I am connected to in Java. Once that is solved I can continue programming, using a stub compiler if necessary.
The purpose of Graphica is to stimulate my personal development and knowledge of computer science, so any pro-s and con-s that I might mention are clearly mine and have to be seen in that light only.

Compiler development 1/2
Although programming domain-specific languages ( with tools like ANTLR ) is part of the standard toolkit (*) of an application programmer, programming compilers is still considered to be a different ballgame. ( Is it? ) I worked for a company once that developed a 4GL. A small group of experts worked on the kernel ( compilers and run-time ). They enjoyed an almost cult-like status, they were literally seen as guru's. The skill to write a compiler was considered God-like. Java was only just released and tools like ANTLR were years ahead of us. - The cruelty is, it always is, that developing compilers is not difficult, it is simple compared to developing satisfactory end-user applications.

"Standard Toolkit" is programmers jargon for a minimal set of technical skills expected of any programmer. Every programmer knows how to query a database with SQL, creating and populating tables to optimize performance is however specialized knowledge expected only of a database administrator or DBA ( although many programmers have DBA skills ).

Mathematics of Mariner 9
In 1971 (!), Mariner 9 transmitted pictures of the planet Mars over a distance of 135 million km, with a transmitter that had a power of only 20 watts (!). With such low power and taking into to account the radio noise of space it is remarkable that data was received at all. Yet, the pictures were near-perfect. How is this possible?
The first pictures of Mars were taken at a resolution of 700 × 832 pixels. The images used 64 different shades of grey. The pictures were transmitted back to Earth by sending one pixel at a time, so we can think of a message as a single number between 0 and 63. The channel could send the two binary digits 0 and 1. Encoding each pixel as a string of 6 bits would not have worked well. A survey gave a probability of 0.05 that a bit would be flipped by the channel, implying that about 26% of the image would be wrong.
It was acceptable for each pixel to be encoded by up to 32 bits, so Mariner sent a volume of more than five times of the original data. But by doing so error-detection and correction techniques could be used so that finally a picture had less than 100 incorrect pixels. Mariner transmitted over 7200 pictures of Mars like this.

This semester we had the opportunity to discuss Richard Skemp's great article on Instrumental and Relational Understanding in class. (“Relational Understanding and Instrumental Understanding,” Richard Skemp, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, September 2006; link goes to a pdf hosted at Portland State) Students read the article, with the following home workshop. Even though this article was written for teachers, Dr Skemp wrote mostly for researchers, and at times the language is a wee thick. Press on!
Activity: Read the article, jotting notes on the 12 questions below. These are just notes, and you may find you have no thoughts on a couple of them. In the reflection you will expand on your thoughts for two of them.
1) What is the point of starting off with the Faux Amis story? (A faux amis are two words in different languages that sound similar but mean differently. Sopa (soup) and soap (jabón) are my favorite from Spanish. Skemp says that the ways we use "understanding" are as different as if they were faux amis.)

The other thing that we've been developing in class is the idea of questioning, both as a teacher, and the benefits of student to student questions. This class struggles with being quiet, but by the fourth group, they've hit full class discussion mode. I really think that conversation is the only way to work towards understanding of big ideas. I filmed the first two groups and then handed off the iPod for recording.
In their groups I asked them to share their reflection from the workshop, they discussed a bit, and then to decide on two points to present to the class. Mostly they used the questions to frame their points. We talked a bit about presentation zen, and I asked them to make a 'slide' for their two points on the board, with the idea to not have a lot of text, but to support their idea with a succinct statement or even better, a visual. They did an excellent job, and I hope you enjoy sharing in their discussion.

As I listened to their discussion, I was struck by how many of the concerns of inservice teachers they already have, which is a real testament to the idea from The Teaching Gap that teaching is a cultural activity. If we do not do something to resolve the tension between what teachers feel they are expected to do (the job) and what they want to and should do (the vocation), we're not going to make any progress. It's almost what Skemp is talking about with the faux amis about our two ideas of learning. The same two ideas are competing and confusing us when we use the word teaching.

കോത്താഴത്തിനു സമാനമായ സ്ഥലങ്ങളായി മറ്റു പലയിടങ്ങളും പരികല്പ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. അതിലൊന്നാണ് എറണാകുളം ജില്ലയിലെ പെരുമ്പാവൂരിനു തെക്കുള്ള കുമ്മനോട് ഗ്രാമം. കുമ്മാട്ടോട്ടുകര ലോപിച്ച് കുമ്മനോടായിത്തീര്ന്നുവെന്നൊരു പ്രബലമായ നാട്ടറിവുണ്ട്. ഈ പ്രദേശത്തും അനുബന്ധസ്ഥലങ്ങളിലും പ്രചരിച്ചു വരുന്ന നാടോടിക്കഥകളില് കുയെയേറെ കഥകള് ഇവിടുത്തുകാര് പമ്പര വിഡ്ഢികളാണെന്നു പ്രത്യക്ഷമായി വിളംബരം ചെയ്യുന്നവയാണ്; കോത്താഴം കഥകളിലെന്ന പോലെ.
വിത്തു വിതയ്ക്കുന്നയാളിന്റെ കാല്പ്പാടു പതിഞ്ഞ് പാടം വൃത്തികേടാവാതിരിക്കാന് വേണ്ടി പല്ലക്കു പോലൊരു മഞ്ചം കെട്ടിയുണ്ടാക്കി നാലുപേര് ചേര്ന്ന് വിതക്കാരനെ ചുമന്നുവെന്നൊരു കഥയുണ്ട്. നെല്ലിക്ക തിന്നതിനു ശേഷം കുടിച്ച വെള്ളത്തിന്റെ മാധുര്യത്തില് മതി മറന്ന് വെള്ളമെടുത്ത കിണറിനെ കെട്ടിവലിച്ച് നാട്ടിലെത്തിക്കാന് കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാര് ശ്രമിച്ചുവെന്നാണ് മറ്റൊരു കഥ. അടയ്ക്ക എറിഞ്ഞു വീഴ്ത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന കര്ഷകന്, പാള അടര്ന്നു വീണ് അടയ്ക്ക കാണാതായതിനെ തുടര്ന്ന് കാവുങ്ങില് കയറി പാള മാറ്റിയശേഷം താഴെയിറങ്ങി ഏറു തുടങ്ങിയത്രേ. ചുരുട്ടിവെച്ച പായ നിവര്ത്താന് വഴിയില്ലാതെ അതിന്റെ ഒരറ്റം ചവിട്ടിപ്പിടിച്ച് നിലത്തു വീണവരും ഇവിടുത്തുകാര് തന്നെ. പാവല് പടര്ത്തി വിടാന് പരുവത്തിലുള്ള ചെടികളോ മരങ്ങളോ കാണാഞ്ഞ കര്ഷകന് അടുത്തു നിന്നിരുന്ന മുള വലിച്ചുതാഴ്ത്തി അതില് പാവല് ബന്ധിച്ചുവെന്നും പിടിവിട്ടപ്പോള് പാവല് വേരോടെ പിഴുതു പോയെന്നും വേറൊരു കഥ.
ഈ കഥകള് സാരമായ വ്യത്യാസങ്ങള് കൂടാതെ കോത്താഴത്തുകാരെപ്പറ്റിയും പരിഹാസരൂപേണ പറഞ്ഞുവരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിലെ മറ്റിടങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചോ ജാതിസമുദായങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ചോ ഈ കഥകള് നിറം മാറി വന്നേക്കാം. എന്നാല് കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാരെക്കുറിച്ച് ചുവടെ ചേര്ക്കുന്ന ആനക്കഥയ്ക്ക് പ്രഭേദങ്ങളോ സമാന്തരങ്ങളോ ഉള്ളതായി അറിവില്ല. ഈ കഥയുടെ കാര്യത്തില് കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാര് മുഴുവനായും ഒറ്റ തിരിഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കുന്നുവെന്നു പറയാം.
ആനയെക്കൊന്നവര്
പാടത്തു വിളഞ്ഞു നിന്നിരുന്ന നെല്ല് നശിപ്പിക്കാന് രാത്രിയില് എത്തിയ ഒരു സാധനമാണ് ഈ അന്യാദൃശ്യതയുടെ മൂലം. നെല്ല് നശിക്കുന്നതെങ്ങനെയെന്ന് എത്ര തലപുകഞ്ഞിട്ടും നാട്ടുകാര്ക്കു മനസ്സിലായില്ല. വയലില് ദൃശ്യമായ വട്ടത്തിലുള്ള അടയാളങ്ങള് കണ്ടിട്ട് ഉരലും തെങ്ങും രാത്രി ഇറങ്ങി നടക്കുന്നതാണെന്ന സംശയം ബലപ്പെട്ടു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇവയെല്ലാം രാത്രിയില് പിടിച്ചു കെട്ടിയിട്ടു. അപ്പോഴും വയലില് വികൃതി തുടര്ന്നു. ഒടുവില് നാട്ടുകാര് എല്ലാവരും രാത്രിയില് സംഘടിച്ച് ആയുധങ്ങളുമായി വയലില് കാത്തിരുന്നു. പാതിരാത്രിയില് വയലിലേയ്ക്ക് എന്തോ വരുന്നതായി തോന്നിയപ്പോള് ഒന്നിച്ച് ആക്രമിച്ചു. വെളിച്ചത്തില് നോക്കിയപ്പോഴാണ് വന്നത് കണ്ണുപൊട്ടനായ ഒരു ആനയായിരുന്നു എന്നും തങ്ങളുടെ ആക്രമണത്തില് അത് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടുവെന്നും നാട്ടുകാര്ക്ക് മനസ്സിലായത്.
ഈ കഥയിലെ സംഭവം നടന്നയിടം എന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന ചങ്ങലപ്പാടം ഇപ്പോഴുമുണ്ട്. കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാരെ ഇരുട്ടുകൊട്ടികള് എന്നു കളിയാക്കി വിളിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനകള് ഈ കഥയിലേക്കു നീളുന്നു. കുമ്മനോട്ടുള്ള ഏഴ് വീട്ടുകാര് ചേര്ന്നാണ് ആനയുടെ ശവം വെട്ടിമുറിച്ച് പങ്കിട്ടെടുത്ത് മറവു ചെയ്തത് എന്നാണ് വിശ്വാസം.
മസ്തകം, കണ്ണ്, എല്ല്, വാല്, പല്ല് എന്നീ ഭാഗങ്ങള് യഥാക്രമം മഠത്തില്, കണിയത്താന്, എമ്പാശേരി, വാത്യാപറമ്പന്, പനയഞ്ചേരി എന്നീ നായര് തറവാട്ടുകാര് എടുത്തു. നടുഭാഗം, പൃഷ്ടഭാഗം എന്നിവ നാടുവാണി എന്ന ഈഴവ കുടുംബത്തിനും കഴിമുണ്ട എന്ന വിശ്വകര്മ്മ വീട്ടുകാര്ക്കും ലഭിച്ചു. ഇതിലെ നാടുവാണി കുടുംബം ഇന്നില്ല. അവര് എവിടേക്കു പോയെന്ന് നാട്ടുകാര്ക്ക് അറിവില്ല.
കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാര് കൊന്ന കണ്ണുപൊട്ടനായ ആന ഇടപ്പള്ളി കോവിലകത്തേതാണെന്ന് അറിയാമായിരുന്ന അങ്കമാലി പടപ്പുമനയിലെ ഒരു നമ്പൂതിരി വിവരങ്ങള് അറിഞ്ഞ് കുമ്മനോടിന്റെ അധികാരം കൈക്കലാക്കാനായി ഇടപ്പള്ളി രാജാവിനെ സമീപിച്ചു. അന്ധനായ ഒരു ആനയെ ദാനമായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. ആന ചരിഞ്ഞ വിവരമൊന്നും അറിയാതിരുന്ന രാജാവ് ആനയുടെ അവകാശത്തിന്റെ ചിഹ്നമായ തോട്ടി നമ്പൂതിരിക്കു നല്കിയത്രേ. ഇതുമായി കുമ്മനോട്ടെത്തിയ നമ്പൂതിരിയെ നേരിടാന്, തങ്ങളുടെ തടിയും നിലവും മറ്റും സംരക്ഷിക്കാന് കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാര് വിഡ്ഢിവേഷം കെട്ടാന് തീരുമാനിച്ചു. ഇങ്ങനെയാണ് ഇരുട്ടെന്നു വിചാരിച്ച് ആനയെക്കൊന്നുവെന്ന കഥ അവര്തന്നെ പറഞ്ഞു പരത്തിയത്. തങ്ങളുടെ വിഡ്ഢിത്തം ഊട്ടിയുറപ്പിക്കാനായി കോത്താഴം കഥകള്ക്ക് രൂപാന്തരം നല്കി അതിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളായി അവര് സ്വയം അവരോധിച്ചു.
എന്നാല് ഈ തന്ത്രം പൂര്ണമായി ഫലിച്ചില്ല. ആനയെക്കൊന്നതിന്റെ നഷ്ടപരിഹാരമായി ഏതാനും കുടുംബങ്ങളുടെ വസ്തുവിന്റെ ആധാരങ്ങള് നമ്പൂതിരി പിടിച്ചെടുത്തു. ഒപ്പം നാട്ടിലെ ദേവീ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഊരാണ്മയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു വന്നു ചേര്ന്നു. ഇന്നും ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം അങ്കമാലി പടപ്പുമനയ്ക്കാണ്. നടത്തിപ്പ് എന്.എസ്.എസ്. കരയോഗത്തിനും.
കഥയും ചരിത്രവും
ചരിത്രം അതേപടി പേറുന്നവയല്ല നാടോടിക്കഥകള്. ചരിത്രാംശങ്ങളുള്ള നാടോടിക്കഥകള് ഉണ്ടാവാം എന്നു മാത്രം. എന്നാല് പൂര്ണമായും ചരിത്രസത്യമെന്ന നിലയിലാണ് ഇവിടെ സൂചിപ്പിച്ച കഥയെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ കൂട്ടായ്മ പരിഗണിക്കുന്നത്. ഗോറ്റ് ഹാം കഥകളും തദ്ദേശീയര് തന്നെ പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചവയാണെന്നു കരുതപ്പെടുന്നു. അന്നത്തെ നിയമമനുസരിച്ച് രാജാവ് ഒരു പ്രദേശത്തു കൂടി കടന്നുപോയാല് അവിടം കൊട്ടാരം വകയായി മാറും. ഒരിക്കല് രാജാവ് ഗോറ്റ്ഹാം വഴി സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നതായി അറിയിപ്പുണ്ടായി. തങ്ങളുടെ സ്ഥലം സംരക്ഷിക്കാനായി ഗോറ്റ്ഹാം നിവാസികള്, രാജാവിന്റെ യാത്രയുടെ കാര്യങ്ങള് തീരുമാനിക്കാന് വന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ മുന്നില് വിഡ്ഢികളോ അരക്കിറുക്കന്മാരോ ആയി അഭിനയിച്ചുവത്രേ! വിഡ്ഢികളുടെ നാട്ടിലൂടെയുള്ള യാത്ര രാജാവ് ഒഴിവാക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇതിനു സമാന്തരമായ ഒരു കഥാപാഠത്തില് തങ്ങളുടെ നാട്ടില് കൊട്ടാരം നിര്മ്മിക്കാനൊരുങ്ങിയ രാജാവിനെ പറ്റിക്കാനായിരുന്നത്രേ ഈ തന്ത്രം. എന്തായാലും ഗോറ്റ്ഹാംകാരുടെ മണ്ടത്തരങ്ങള്ക്ക് പിന്നീട് പ്രചാരം ലഭിക്കുകയും അതു മായ്ച്ചു കളയാനാവാത്ത വിധം ജനമനസ്സില് ആഴ്ന്നിറങ്ങുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇതേ ഘടനയും അടിസ്ഥാന മോട്ടിഫുകളും തന്നെയാണ് കുമ്മനോടന് കഥയിലും തെളിഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കുന്നത്. മനുഷ്യനിര്മ്മിതമായ അധികാര ബന്ധങ്ങളെ അതിവര്ത്തിക്കുന്ന ഭ്രാന്തിലും വിഡ്ഢിത്തത്തിലും അഭയം തേടുക വഴി ഭരണവര്ഗത്തോടുള്ള കലഹത്തിന്റെ ജ്ഞാനമാതൃകകള് നിര്മ്മിച്ചെടുക്കുകയാണ് ഈ രണ്ടു കഥാസംഭവങ്ങളും. അടുത്ത കാലംവരെ ഭ്രാന്തും വിഡ്ഢിത്തവും താരതമ്യേന വ്യവച്ഛേദിച്ചറിയാനാവാത്ത അവസ്ഥകളായിരുന്നുവെന്ന മിഷേല് ഫൂക്കോയുടെ നിരീക്ഷണം ഏറെ പ്രസക്തമാണിവിടെ. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest എന്ന നോവലിലും സിനിമയിലും ബധിരനും മൂകനുമായിനടിക്കുന്ന ചീഫ് ബ്രോംഡന് എന്ന റെഡ് ഇന്ത്യന് കീഴാളന് എങ്ങനെയാണ് അധികാരത്തിന്റെ പിടിയില് നിന്ന് നായകനെ രക്ഷിക്കുന്നതെന്നും (അതു മരണത്തിലേക്കായാല്പ്പോലും) സ്വയം സ്വതന്ത്ര്യം പ്രാപിക്കുന്നതെന്നും ചേര്ത്ത് ആലോചിക്കാവുന്നതാണ്.
പൊതുവെ കീഴാളത്തം അനുഭവിച്ചവരെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയുള്ളതാണ് കുമ്മനോടന് കഥ. ഇവര്ക്കു മേലെയാണ് പടപ്പ് മനയിലെ നമ്പൂതിരി അധികാരം സ്ഥാപിക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാ സ്വത്തുക്കള്ക്കും ഉടമകളായിരുന്ന ആദിമജനതയെ ബ്രാഹ്മണന് കുടില തന്ത്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ കീഴ്പ്പെടുത്തി നാട്ടുകാര്ക്കുമേല് അധികാരം നേടിയെന്ന ചരിത്രത്തിന്റെ / വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ മാതൃകയായി ഈ കഥയെയും പരിഗണിക്കാം.
കുമ്മനോട് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ അവകാശിയായ പടപ്പ് മനയില് പരമേശ്വരന് നമ്പൂതിരി ആനയെക്കൊന്ന കഥ കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. കാരണവന്മാരില്നിന്ന് പകര്ന്നു കിട്ടിയതാണത്. എന്നാല് അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു പാരമ്പര്യമായി ലഭിച്ച കഥയില് പടപ്പുമനയിലെ പഴയ നമ്പൂതിരി കുമ്മനോട്ടുകാരുടെ മേല് അധികാരം നേടുന്ന കഥാഭാഗങ്ങളില്ല. നാട്ടുകാര് പറയുന്ന കഥയില് അങ്ങനെയൊരു ഭാഗം ഉണ്ടെന്നു സൂചിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോള് അത് ഐക്കരനാട്ടിലെ തുരുത്തുക്കാട് എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്ന പടപ്പ് മനയെക്കുറിച്ചാവാനേ തരമുള്ളൂ എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിപ്രായം. ആഖ്യാനങ്ങള് കേവല ആഖ്യാനങ്ങളല്ല, അതിന്റെ പിന്നിലും രാഷ്ട്രീയം പ്രവര്ത്തിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

Study Tip - 4 ( Plan, plan and plan )
It has been a while since my last study tip.
That is what I mean by "plan, plan and plan".
Oh, I no longer think in time, my unit of doable work is the Pomodoro. More about pomos another time.
Learning style
I am not a type that can sit still for hours to read, think deep mathematics and make an occasional note in my virtual notepad in my memory. Although I would like to be like that it is not going to happen. They say Euler was like that. That's why he had no problem to continue with his mathematics after he became blind. Stephen Hawking also has this ability to do theoretical physics in his mind. In the Netherlands we have a former checkers World Champion, Ton Sijbrands, who can play and win or draw close to 30 games blind. It proves what the human brain is capable of, in principle. - I can't do it though because I have to be active, I must do something, better: create something. Otherwise I can literally doze off. A friend once said that I have a kinematic learning style. Different people have different learning styles. I can't sit in a lecture and listen to a lecturer either. It literally goes in one ear, leaves the other, without any storage or processing in between. I get extremely bored in lectures ( or courses ), days seem ages because I want to go home to -do- something.Check-sheet
Over time I organized my style of studying into a series of to-do items. The first to do is always 'Make a detailed plan.' For example if I plan studying a booklet ( Open University study materials are delivered in booklets which often take two weeks to study, or something between 16 and 32 hours ) I create a check-sheet for it. ( If you have ever done a course in scientology, you know the concept. ) If you study from a check-sheet you won't have those blockages. They really work. The most important thing is that you create a plan that works for you. A plan helps you go through the materials and you know when to do what and no more. That way you won't fall in the 'I never have time-off trap'.Statistic
Maybe you study to make a step on the career ladder, expect to make more money or maybe you simply want to be able to do your current job better. Or you study to get a(nother) job, or you finally want that degree. In any case you have a deep interest in the subject you study. Final study results come in after many years of study. They are hard to measure on a daily basis, even success on a module which usually takes a year is not a good measurement. TMA results? Yes, somewhat. But what if you got that 'good' result by cramming the TMA out in 48 hours of almost continuously cramming? You will have forgotten the materials on the exam. You have to set a study statistic you can measure on a daily basis. I make ( = do ) flash cards with the open source program Anki. For example when I study a definition, of a graph for example. I type in Anki Q: What is a graph. A. A graph G is a tuple [V,E] where V is a set of vertices. etc. Anki makes sure that I will never forget the definition by monitoring my recall on the question in a very efficient manner. But most of all, I am doing something while styding because I am alert and awake as to which questions I have to put in Anki. Naturally I try to formulate the answers in my own words. Anki then provides me a with a range of graphs and statistics about my progress.Feedback
Have you ever made a plan which worked well for onze day but you threw away the next day because all the time unexpected things happen? I often made plans to study on times when I was not physically up to studying. I felt tired, spent too much time in traffic, got hold and so forth. That is very valuable information you can use when you make your next plan! And if you record the time spent on each topic your time-estimates will improve and improve.That is what I mean by "plan, plan and plan".

I do most of my calculations on computers a geek would frown at today but were dreaming of only five years ago. What is computing power? - Since I am not a gamer I thought that I never needed a high-end PC. Now, I think I need a whole wall of them. Serious. It's kind of crazy, isn't it. More of this madness in future posts, I promise.

പെന്ഡ്രൈവ് വഴി പരക്കുന്ന വൈറസ് വിന്ഡോസ് സിസ്റ്റം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നവരുടെ തലവേദനയായിരുന്നു. വിവിധ ആന്റി വൈറസുകളും പെന്ഡ്രൈവില് സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ആന്റിവൈറസുകളും എല്ലാം മാറി മാറി പരീക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിനൊപ്പം ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ഒരു മാര്ഗമായിരുന്നു പെന് ഡ്രൈവുകളുടെ ഓട്ടോറണ് ഡിസേബിള് ചെയ്യുക എന്നത്. അതായത് പെന്ഡ്രൈവ് സിസ്റ്റത്തില് കണക്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോളേ അത് തുറന്നു വന്ന് പ്രോഗ്രാമകള്ക്ക് റണ് ചെയ്യാനുള്ള സൗകര്യം നല്കുന്നതില് നിന്നും അതിനെ തടയുകയാണ് ഇതില് ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഏറെ വിജയകരമായി പലരും ഇതിനെ പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്തിയിരുന്നു.
ഉബുണ്ടുവില് ഇങ്ങിനെ വൈറസിനെ പേടിക്കേണ്ട കാര്യമില്ലെങ്കിലും പെന്ഡ്രൈവ് കുത്തുമ്പോളേ ഫോള്ഡറുകളുമായി തുറന്നു വരുന്ന അവസ്ഥ പലര്ക്കും അരോചകമാകുന്നു. " പെന്ഡ്രൈവ് കണക്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോളേ തുറന്നു വരേണ്ടതില്ല. നമുക്ക് ആവശ്യമുള്ളപ്പോള് അത് തുറന്നു കൊള്ളാം.", എന്ന നിലപാടുള്ളവര്ക്ക് ഏറെ പ്രയോജനപ്രദമാണ് ഈ പോസ്റ്റ്.
ലിനക്സ് ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകളില് പെന്ഡ്രൈവുകളോ എക്സ്റ്റേണല് ഹാര്ഡ് ഡിസ്കുകളോ കണക്ടുചെയ്യുമ്പോള് സാധാരണയായി അവയിലുള്ളത്രയും പാര്ട്ടീഷനുകള് ഡെസ്ക്ടോപ്പില് ഐക്കണിന്റെ രൂപത്തില് പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുകയും അവയെല്ലാം നോട്ടിലസില്(File Browser) തുറന്നുവരികയും ചെയ്യാറുണ്ടല്ലോ. അതിന് എളുപ്പത്തിലൊരു പരിഹാരം കാണാന് ശ്രമിക്കുകയാണിവിടെ.
അതിനായി ആദ്യം Run Dialog Box(Alt+F2) തുറക്കുകയോ ടെര്മിനല് തുറക്കുകയോ ആണു വേണ്ടത്. എന്നിട്ട് gconf-editor എന്നു തെറ്റാതെ ടൈപ്പുചെയ്ത് Enter ചെയ്യണം.
ഇപ്പോള് Configuration Editorഎന്ന ജാലകം തുറന്നുവരും. (ടെര്മിനലില് ആണു തുറക്കുന്നതെങ്കില് ടെര്മിനല് വിന്ഡോ ക്ലോസ് ചെയ്യരുതെന്ന കാര്യം മറക്കരുത്).എന്നിട്ട് Configuration Editor ജാലകത്തില് ഇടതുവശത്തുകാണുന്ന apps എന്ന ഫോള്ഡര് ഐക്കണില് ഡബിള്ക്ലിക്കുചെയ്യണം
ഇപ്പോള് പ്രത്യക്ഷമാകുന്ന ഫോള്ഡര് ഐക്കണുകളില് nautilusല് ഡബിള്ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുക. ഇപ്പോള് താഴെ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെടുന്ന Desktop എന്ന ഫോള്ഡറില് ക്ലിക്കുചെയ്യുമ്പോള് വലതുവശത്ത് കാണുന്ന volumes_visible എന്നതിനു നേരേയുള്ള ടിക്ക് ഒഴിവാക്കുക.
ഡെസ്ക്ടോപ്പില് ഒരു ഐക്കണും വേണ്ട എന്നാണെങ്കില് മുകളിലുള്ള മറ്റു ടിക്കുകളും ഒഴിവാക്കാവുന്നതാണ്. ഇനി നോട്ടിലസ് തുറന്നു വരുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കാന് nautilus എന്ന ഫോള്ഡര് എക്കണിന്റെ തന്നെ ചുവടെയുള്ള preferences തുറന്ന് വലതുവശത്തുനിന്നും media_automount_open സ്ക്രോള് ചെയ്ത് കണ്ടുപിടിച്ച് അതിനു നേരേയുള്ള ടിക്ക് ഒഴിവാക്കണം.
ഇനി Configuration Editor ജാലകം ക്ലോസ് ചെയ്യാം. ഇപ്പോള് മൌണ്ട് ചെയ്ത പാര്ട്ടീഷ്യനുകള് ഡെസ്ക്ടോപ്പില് നിന്നും അപ്രത്യക്ഷമായി ഡെസ്ക്ടോപ്പ് ക്ലീനായിരിക്കുന്നതു കാണാം. ഇനി പാര്ട്ടീഷ്യനുകള് തുറക്കണമെങ്കില് ഹോം ഫോള്ഡര് തുറക്കുമ്പോള് ഇടതുവശത്തുകാണുന്ന Places ലിസ്റ്റില് നിന്നും ആവശ്യമായ പാര്ട്ടീഷ്യന് മാത്രം തുറന്നുകാണാം.

Fabric of the Cosmos
I think I finally 'get it'. That space-time is not just a word, but a fabric. The fabric of the cosmos.
PBS did it again. They created a documentary you'll still be talking about in ten years time. If that sounds strange, think of the documentaries of Jacob Bronowski, Carl Sagan and Marcus du Sautoy.

Make and Take
The game grew out of a meeting with Nick Smith, one of our novice teachers with a good game eye. He was looking for a way to make a game with number operations and maybe order of operations that had us using cards and trying to make a target. Wasn't quite working out.
Finally it occurred to me that if you were setting the target for your opponents... started trying it with cards and BAM! A game. It's simple enough, probably someone else has come across it before. Basically, you deal 5 cards to each player/team, each team picks one card for the other team to make by combining their remaining cards with operations.

To launch it with the 5th graders today, the teacher and I started to play. I put up the values for Ace, Jack, Queen and King on the board - which was a good idea as students consulted it frequently. Today was 11-11-11, and Jake, one of the students, had a birthday... his 11th! (He was in the local paper last night.) So we renamed the Jack the Jake in his honor, since the Jack is worth 11. Sometimes stuff just works out.
After about three turns of demonstration, the students were clamoring to play. Who are we to stand in the way of a math game? Students were engaged, making interesting combinations, and making more complicated combinations as play went on. It adapted well to students at different levels, as they were choosing combinations, and I was able to see automaticity with subtraction improving in students who have some math struggles at the same time as self-identified math whizzes were challenged to find fascinating 4 card combos, like Jack - 4/4, divided by 2 to get 5.
I tried the game with younger learners previously, and they got good addition and subtraction practice, and think it would extend well to middle school as support for order of operations. (Write down your combination and check it on a scientific calculator.) It was nice that sometimes the game called for easier combinations and had moments of challenge. Students were actively searching for new people to play and telling stories about games and combos. Very fun.
To finish our time, we discussed the combos (I had recorded some of the better ones on the board, such as Q, 5, 4, 4 -> 10), the strategy and the name. I like how the game becomes a context for some pretty good problems. The students were split on what made a difficult target. The majority felt like middle cards were harder to make, but a few thought the smallest cards. I actually don't know! One aspect of the game that I like a lot is that you gain information about the opponent's hand as you play. A strategy that many came across was reusing target numbers that your opponent couldn't make.There weren't a lot of suggestions for names... math war and math attack had some support. More suggestions about the game would be welcome, also.
Having written those game design commentaries lately (one & two), I can't resist thinking about the game using it.
- Goal(s). See numbers as related by operations. This game is great for that.
- Structure.The game reflects the goal by using a shifting set of cards. The slow turn over allows students to build relationships and more and more complicated sets of computations.
- Strategy. The selection of targets and which cards to keep to make combinations is the first level. Taking into account your opponents' cards is a whole 'nother level.
- Interaction. Choosing the target for your opponents and having to make their target offers lots of interaction.
- Surprise. The cards you draw and the target you're trying to make.
- Catch-Up. This could be a weak area. Once kids are good enough, it's rare to miss the target, which means it's hard to catch up. That's when you switch to the four card variation, which can be very challenging.
- Inertia. Kids were divided on the 10 card winning condition. Some thought it should be lower. One student who loved the game suggested 13 cards!
- Rules. Big win for this game. Very simple.
- Context. No context, but the game did seem to have a pretty fun level of gameplay for students.
