Galois Theory (3)
Equations of degree 5 and higher can't be solved. That's what I thought. I knew that certain equations of degree 5 could be solved however like $x^5 - a = 0$. Abel's impossibility theorem ( aka Abel-Ruffini theorem ) says that the quintic can't be solved in general by radicals. In general. What they in fact proved is that some equations can't be solved by radicals. Galois developed a technique for determining if an equation can be solved by radicals or not. This technique was the start of Group- and Galois Theory. A polynomial has a corresponding group, it's so called Galois Group. If this group is solvable, i.e. is a solvable group then the equation can be solved by radicals.

What next ?
I have written earlier that I would probably do MST209 and 2 30p Level 3s in 2011. No way! Even if it would be possible: it is no fun. I think I will like MST209, so it will be MST209 + ( maybe ) another course. Number Theory would be ideal, but, and this makes me sooo angry, they merged Logic/Computability into M381.

To Understand - Book Club
The K-8 Geometry class is reading To Understand this semester. This book is Ellin Oliver Keene's follow up to her mega-book with Susan Zimmerman, Mosaic of Thought. Yes they're reading a reading book. But this book is really about comprehension, much like Mosaic of Thought, and most of these preservice teachers will be in elementary school, and teaching reading. This is the second semester using this book, which had mixed results last semester, but overall positive reviews from students.
The aspect of the book that students had trouble with is that each chapter (from 3 on) starts with the story of someone in the arts advancing their own understanding. It was difficult for some students to connect with these stories if they were unfamiliar with the artist. Last semester students did make lots of connection to what they'd read from Mem Fox; Reading Magic is on my list, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
The structure we're using is groups of up to 8, where each group has a leader - responsible for keeping things moving, questioner - for prompting discussion, recorder, and a reporter who leads the group's sharing with the whole class. After the free discussion period, the group talks about what to share, then the whole class discussion starts.

Some notes from our discussion:
Chapter 1: Rethinking Understanding & Chapter 2: Seeking Understanding in our minds, our lives
- Teach concepts for greater depth. Current understanding is the key to understanding in the future. Don't do too many topics.
- Even in a calc class, you can move on before students have a conceptual understanding.
- Quality vs quantity is a dangerous choice. Eg. pizza parties for number of books vs what was learned.
- Teach in different styles with kids having choice of structure. In elementary and HS everything was more structured vs in college when the info is presented and you do with it what you will. Elementary school needs more choice and freedom.
- Everything has trial and error. Repetition is everywhere, for example math workbooks that ask many of exactly the same form of question.
- Testing is crappy, and we focus more on scores than understanding. The test generate so much pressure from so many sources. Home, school, etc. You never get them back, so you can't learn from it. Test too much, at least standardized testing. What if the kid doesn't have supportive conditions (sleep, food, etc.)
- All children can achieve greatness. A principal who says "someone's got to flip the burgers..."; this kid just isn't good at that. Beliefs will be communicated to students. Vs. believing in all students.
- "We can extinguish the notion that some kids are going to make it and some kids won't." Psych study that showed teacher beliefs have a huge impact on achievement.
- After Ellin described a great day, her husband David asked: "why isn't everyday like that?" Easy to make excuses. Ultimately it's because we don't expect them to. Belief motivates.
- What will you do about barriers to eliminate the real reasons for student struggle? Eg. a teacher who brought in bagels and cream cheese before a long standardized test.
- Also be careful not to expect too much, so students feel defeated.
- In elementary kids are excited to go to school. They will/do lose that if it's not supported.
- Do teachers care more about noise or intellectual activity?
- One student hated the book so far because it felt like the author posed questions without answering them. Another student said that that was creating a desire to read on and a curiosity. That maybe the whole book was about what it means to understand.

For my teaching
- First workshop (focused on determining importance) was more beneficial than the 2nd (stopping at each page to monitor your comprehension). Better recall of Ch 1. Stopping at each page broke the flow of reading. (This was ironic because last semester it was reverse, so I had changed Chapter 3 workshop to be like Chapter 2. But I let them know they can always choose a different way to meet the objective for the workshop.)
- This workshop (Ch 2) can be an example of what not to do. If it becomes a task to do the motions, then it defeats its own purpose of looking for comprehension.

Galois Theory (2)
The polynomial F(x) = x^8 - 40x^6 + 352x^4 +960x^2 - 576 has 8 ( real ) roots : +/- Sqrt(2) +/- Sqrt(3) +/- Sqrt(5). ( See image above. ) The symmetry group of the roots is abelian and has order 8, all elements have order 2, so the group is isomorphic to C2 X C2 X C2.
I have found another introductory book on Galois Theory for undergraduates ( to support my study of Weintraub's Galois Theory I think, for the moment anyway. )
It comes with AlgFields ( download here ), a system of Maple and Mathematica routines for calculating with low-dimensional number fields and finite fields.

മൂഢന് ആയുധം കിട്ടിയാല്
ഒരിടത്തൊരിടത്ത് ഒരു രാജാവുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എവിടെ നിന്നോ വന്ന് തന്നോട് പ്രിയം കാണിച്ചു കൂടിയ കുരങ്ങനോട് രാജാവിന് പ്രിയം തോന്നി. അവന്റെ സ്വാമിഭക്തിയില് വാത്സല്യമേറിയ രാജാവ് അവന് കൂടുതല് കൂടുതല് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നല്കിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. അന്തഃപുരത്തില് വരെ സഞ്ചരിക്കാനുള്ള സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം അവനുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഇതോടെ അവന്റെ മണ്ടത്തരങ്ങള്ക്ക് ലക്കും ലഗാനുമില്ലാതായി. മിണ്ടിയാല് തുറുങ്കിലടക്കാനും വേണമെങ്കില് കൊല്ലാനും അധികാരമുള്ള രാജാവിനോട് മറുത്തൊരു അക്ഷരം പോലും പറയാന് ആരും ധൈര്യപ്പെട്ടില്ല. രാജാവ് തന്റെ സ്നേഹം സഹിക്കവയ്യാതെ തന്റെ വിശ്വസ്തനായ അംഗരക്ഷകന് എന്ന പദവിയിലേക്ക് വരെ അവനെ ഉയര്ത്തി. രാജാവിന്റെ കാവല്ക്കാരന്റെ ജാഡ പറയാനുണ്ടോ? ഇതോടെ കുരങ്ങനെതിരെ പരസ്യമായി ഒരു വിരലുപോലും അനക്കാനാവാത്ത അവസ്ഥയിലായി മറ്റുള്ളവര്.ഒരു ദിവസം രാജാവ് ഉറങ്ങുമ്പോള്, കുരങ്ങന് വീശിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ആ സമയത്താണ് ഒരു ഈച്ചയുടെ വരവ്. അത് രാജാവിന്റെ നെഞ്ചിലാണ് വന്നിരുന്നത്. കുരങ്ങന്റെ മനസ്സില് പല ആശങ്കകളും കടന്നു വന്നു. ഈ ഒരൊറ്റ ഈച്ച മൂലം രാജാവിന്റെ ശരീരത്തിലെ രക്തം മുഴുവന് വാര്ന്നു പോയാലോ? അതുമൂലം രാജാവിനുണ്ടാകുന്ന കഷ്ടനഷ്ടങ്ങളില് നിന്നും അദ്ദേഹത്തെയും രാജ്യത്തെയുമെല്ലാം രക്ഷിക്കേണ്ടത് തന്റെ ചുമതലയല്ലേ? ഈച്ചകളുടെ വര്ഗത്തെത്തന്നെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കിക്കളയേണ്ടതാണ് !! 'അതിബുദ്ധിമാനായ' കുരങ്ങന് ദേഷ്യം വന്നു. അവന് തന്റെ വാളെടുത്ത് ഈച്ചയെ ആഞ്ഞു വെട്ടി. ഈച്ച പറന്നു പോയി. വാള് കൊണ്ടത് എവിടെയായിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പറയേണ്ടതുണ്ടോ? വാള് കൊണ്ടുള്ള വെട്ടേറ്റ് രാജാവ് മരണമടഞ്ഞു.
ഏത് ജോലിയിലായാലും അര്ഹരായവരെ നിയമിക്കണമെന്നും ദീര്ഘായുസ്സ് ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കില് വിഡ്ഢിയായ ഒരുത്തനെ സേവകനാക്കരുതെന്നുമാണ് ഈ പഞ്ചതന്ത്രം കഥയുടെ ഗുണപാഠം. അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്താല് അവന് തോന്നുന്ന കാര്യങ്ങള് അവനെപ്പോഴും പ്രവര്ത്തിച്ചു കൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും. ഒരാളെ ഒരു ജോലിയേല്പ്പിക്കുമ്പോള് ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടിവരുന്ന കാര്യമാണല്ലോ ഇത്.
ചരിത്രത്തോടും ഭാവിയോടും വര്ത്തമാനകാല സാഹചര്യങ്ങളോടും കാലാതിശയിയായ വിധത്തില് പഞ്ചതന്ത്രം കഥകള് ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടു നില്ക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ദിശാബോധം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഉഴലുന്ന തലമുറകള്ക്കും കഥകള് വഴിവെട്ടമേകുമെന്നതില് സംശയമില്ല. ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ള കഥകള് കുട്ടികളേപ്പോലെ തന്നെ മുതിര്ന്നവരേയും ആകര്ഷിക്കും. സംസ്കൃതഭാഷയിലുണ്ടായ പഞ്ചതന്ത്രം ക്രിസ്തുവിന് മുന്പേ പല ഭാഷകളിലും വിവര്ത്തനം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്. അന്പതോളം ലോകഭാഷകളില് തര്ജ്ജുമ ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന് ഇരുന്നൂറിനു മേല് വിവര്ത്തനങ്ങളുമുണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടത്രേ. വായനാശീലം നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന ഇക്കാലത്ത് പഞ്ചതന്ത്രം കഥകള് കുട്ടികള് വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ടത് അത്യാവശ്യമാണ്. ക്ലാസ് മുറികളില് ചിന്തോദ്ദീപങ്ങളായ കഥകള് അവര്ക്ക് മുന്നില് അവതരിപ്പിക്കാന് അധ്യാപകനെ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല് സഹായിക്കുന്ന മറ്റൊരു ഗ്രന്ഥത്തെത്തേടി നമ്മള് പോകേണ്ടതില്ല.
മഹിളാരോപ്യത്തിലെ രാജാവായിരുന്ന അമരശക്തിയുടെ ബുദ്ധിഹീനന്മാരായ മൂന്നു പുത്രന്മാരെ ശാസ്ത്രങ്ങളില് പ്രാവീണ്യമുള്ളവരാക്കുകയായെന്ന ഉദ്ദേശത്തോടെ വിഷ്ണുശര്മ്മ എന്ന ബ്രാഹ്മണനാണത്രേ ഈ മഹദ്ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിന്റെ രചയിതാവ്. വെറും ആറുമാസത്തിനുള്ളില് അവര് മൂന്നു പേരും അജ്ഞാനം വിട്ടകന്ന് നീതിബോധമുള്ളവരായിത്തീര്ന്നു പോയത്രേ. അന്നു മുതല്ക്ക് പഞ്ചതന്ത്രമെന്ന നീതിശാസ്ത്രം കുട്ടികളുടെ അറിവിനായി പ്രചാരം നേടിയത്. നീതിബോധത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില് മുതിര്ന്നവരെപ്പോലും ഇരുത്തിച്ചിന്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഈ കഥകള് ഓരോരുത്തരും വായിച്ചിരിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്.

എ-ലിസ്റ്റ് ഡാറ്റാ എന്റ്റി !
എസ്.എസ്.എല്.സി എ-ലിസ്റ്റ് ഡാറ്റാ-എന്റ്റി സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയര് ഇന്സ്റ്റലേഷന്റെ സമയമായിരിക്കുകയാണല്ലോ..?
സോഫ്റ്റ് വെയര് ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്ത് ഡാറ്റാ എന്റ്റി തീര്ത്ത് കുറ്റമറ്റതാക്കി അപ്ലോഡ് ചെയ്യേണ്ടത് നവംബര് ഒന്നിനു മുമ്പാണ്. ഇതുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞവര്ഷം നാം നല്കിയ സഹായം ഒരുപാട് പേര്ക്ക് ഉപകാരപ്പെട്ടതായി അറിയിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇത്തവണയും സ്കൂള് ഗ്നൂ-ലിനക്സ് 3.2 വിലാണ് ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്യാന് നിര്ദ്ദേശം ലഭിച്ചിരുന്നത്.എന്നാല്, പിന്നീട് ഉബുണ്ടുവിലും ചെയ്യാന് സമ്മതം ലഭിച്ചു. സ്കൂള് ഗ്നൂ-ലിനക്സ് 3.2 ല് കഴിഞ്ഞവര്ഷത്തേതില് നിന്ന് കാര്യമായ യാതൊരു മാറ്റവും ഇന്സ്റ്റലേഷന് സംബന്ധമായി ഇല്ലതന്നെ! എങ്കിലും സംശയങ്ങള് സ്വാഭാവികം തന്നെ. ഭാഗ്യത്തിന്, നമ്മുടെ രണ്ടു ബ്ലോഗ് ടീമംഗങ്ങളായ മാസ്റ്റര് ട്രൈനേഴ്സ് ( നിസാര് മാഷും ശങ്കരന് മാഷും) യഥാക്രമം എറണാകുളം, കാസര്ഗോഡ് എന്നീ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലകളെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചും, ജയദേവന് മാഷ് ആലുവയെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിച്ചും ഇതിന്റെ ട്രൈനര്മാരായുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ,ഹസൈനാര് സാര്, പ്രദീപ് മാട്ടറ, സജിമോന് തുടങ്ങിയ മാസ്റ്റര് ട്രെയിനേഴ്സും എന്നും നമ്മോടൊപ്പമുണ്ടല്ലോ..? ഈ ലേഖനവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ടുള്ള സംശയങ്ങളോ തിരുത്തുകളോ ആവശ്യമെങ്കില് കമന്റ് ചെയ്യുമല്ലോ. ഇനി സ്കൂള് ഗ്നൂ-ലിനക്സ് 3.2 വില് ഇത് ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്യുന്ന വിധം നോക്കൂ........
Step 1
MySql ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്തിട്ടുള്ള കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറിലേ നമുക്ക് ഈ SSLC A-LIst ഡാറ്റാ എന്ട്രി സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയര് ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്യാനാകൂ. അത് ലോഡ് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടോയെന്ന് ചെക്കു ചെയ്യാം.
Root ആയി മാത്രം ഇന്സ്റ്റലേഷന് നടത്താനാണ് സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയര് നിര്ദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് റൂട്ടായി Login ചെയ്താല് മതി.
1.Desktop-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager എടുക്കുക.
2.Control Key യും f ബട്ടണും ഒരേ സമയം അമര്ത്തുക.
3.ഇപ്പോള് വരുന്ന Search Box ല് mysql എന്ന് Type ചെയ്ത് Enter അടിക്കുക.
4.റിസല്ട്ടായി വരുന്ന ഫയലുകളില് mysql എന്ന് പേര് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ഫയലുകള് നോക്കുക.
mysql ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കില് ആ ഫയലുകളുടെയെല്ലാം ഇടതുവശത്ത് ഒരു പച്ച ചതുരം കാണാം.
ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്തിട്ടില്ലെങ്കില് വെള്ള ചതുരമായിരിക്കും കാണുക. എങ്കില് നമുക്ക് mysql ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്യണം.
ലിനക്സ് 3.2 വിന്റെ സെക്കന്റ് സിഡി ഡ്രൈവിലിട്ട് Edit-Add CD Rom വഴി add ചെയ്യണം.
ശേഷം mysql ല് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ആ ഫയലുകളുടടെയെല്ലാം ഇടതുവശത്തെ വെളുത്ത ചതുരത്തില് ക്ലിക്ക് (Left click) ചെയ്യുമ്പോള് വരുന്ന വിന്റോയില് നിന്നും Mark for installation സെലക്ട് ചെയ്ത് മെനുബാറിന് താഴെയുള്ള Apply ബട്ടണില് ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുക. ഇന്സ്റ്റലേഷന് നടക്കും.
Step 2
സോഫ്റ്റ്വെയര് സി.ഡിയില് നിന്നും dist എന്ന ഫോള്ഡര് copy എടുത്ത് Root ന്റെ Desktop ലേക്ക് Paste ചെയ്യുക.
ഇനി mysql പ്രോഗ്രാമിലേക്ക് ലോഗിന് ചെയ്യേണ്ടേ?
Applications-System Tools-Terminalഎന്ന ക്രമത്തില് ടെര്മിനല് തുറന്ന്
mysql -u root mysql; എന്ന് ടൈപ്പ് ചെയ്ത് Enter അടിക്കുക.
(ഏത് mysql കമാന്റിന് ശേഷവും Semicolon ഇടാന് മറക്കരുത്)
പിന്നീടെപ്പോഴെങ്കിലും mysql കമാന്റുകളെപ്പറ്റി അറിയണമെന്നുണ്ടോ?
ഇതാ ഡൗണ്ലോഡ് ചെയ്ത് വെച്ചോളൂ
ആ സമയം ഇങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കും output ലഭിക്കുക
Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the buffer.

പാസ്വേഡ് കൊടുക്കാം
SET PASSWORD FOR root@localhost=PASSWORD('root');എന്ന് ടൈപ്പ് ചെയ്ത് Enter അടിക്കുക.
ആ സമയം ഇങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കും output ലഭിക്കുക
mysql> SET PASSWORD FOR root@localhost=PASSWORD('root');
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.00 sec)
mysql>
ഇതിന് മുന്പെങ്ങാന് sslc എന്ന പേരില് ഒരു Database Mysql ല് ഉണ്ടെങ്കില് Deleteചെയ്തേ പറ്റൂ
drop database sslc; എന്ന് ടൈപ്പ് ചെയ്ത് Enter അടിക്കുക.
ഇനി പുതിയ Database നിര്മ്മിക്കണം
create database sslc; എന്ന് ടൈപ്പ് ചെയ്ത് Enter അടിക്കുക.
ആ സമയം ഇങ്ങനെയായിരിക്കും output ലഭിക്കുക
mysql> create database sslc;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.02 sec)
mysql>
ഇനി നമുക്ക് എ-ലിസ്റ്റിന്റെ ടേബിള് ഡാറ്റ Database ലേക്ക് കോപ്പി ചെയ്യുന്ന പ്രവര്ത്തനമാണ് നടത്തേണ്ടത്.
അതു കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ mysql പ്രവര്ത്തനം തല്ക്കാലത്തേക്ക് Abort ചെയ്യാം
ഇതിനായി കണ്ട്രോള് C അമര്ത്തുക
output ആയി aborted എന്നു വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാകും.
ഇനി Dist ഫോള്ഡറില് Right Click ചെയ്യുക. ഇപ്പോള് വരുന്ന വിന്റോയിലെ run in Terminal ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്യുക.
ഇപ്പോള് ടെര്മിനലില് Debain:~/Desktop/dist# എന്നു വന്നിട്ടുണ്ടാകും.
അവിടെ mysql -u root -proot sslc<sslc_db.sql
അല്പം സമയം കാത്തിരിക്കുക. ഇവിടെ ടേബിള് ഡാറ്റ Create ചെയ്യപ്പെടുകയാണ്
ഈ പ്രവര്ത്തനം കഴിയുമ്പോള് Automatic ആയി Debain:~/Desktop/dist# എന്നു വന്നു നില്ക്കും.
സ്റ്റെപ്പ് 3
ഇനി നമുക്ക് ജാവ ഇന്സ്റ്റാള് ചെയ്യണം. (Java നേരത്തെ Install ചെയ്ത സിസ്റ്റത്തില് 3 ഉം 4 ഉം steps ആവശ്യമില്ല. പിന്നീട് programme run ചെയ്യിക്കാനായി (step: 5) SSLCApp.sh എന്ന ഫയല് ഡബിള് ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്ത് run ചെയ്യിക്കുന്നതിന് പകരം Desktop ല് ഉള്ള Dist ഫോള്ഡറിലെ തന്നെ SSLCApp.jar എന്ന ഫയലില് right click ചെയ്ത് open with sun java 6 run time എന്നതില് ക്ലിക്ക് ചെയ്താല് മതി.)
dist ഫോള്ഡറിലെ jdk-6u7-linux-i586.bin
എന്ന ഫയല് കോപ്പി ചെയ്ത് റൂട്ടിന്റെ home folder ല് പേസ്റ്റു ചെയ്യുക.

Math and Multimedia Carnival 4 has been up for a bit. Lots of good things, interesting entries and great 4 images. I feel challenged, as it will be here next month. (Quick, think of cool 5 stuff!) I'm already getting some submissions, and I encourage you to submit your own items, of course, but also to share posts on blogs you follow that are good examples of the organizing idea. What is the organizing idea? Work that shows one or more of the following:
1. Connection between and among different mathematical conceptsSubmit an article.
2. Connections between math and real life; use of real-life contexts to explain mathematical concepts
3. Clear and intuitive explanation of topics not discussed intextbooks, hard to understand, or difficult to teach
4. Proofs of mathematical theorems in which the difficulty of the explanation is accessible to high school students
5. Intuitive explanation of higher math topics, in which the difficulty is accessible to high school students

Inservice Links
I get the opportunity to work on occasion with the secondary math teachers in Allendale, which is a 1:1 school (laptop:student). Mostly it's trying to support them as they integrate technology for their efficiency and student support. I don't know as much about their tech as they do, mostly, and obviously they know their students better, too. They do a great job at using the time together to mutually develop tech skills, share what they're doing and how, and fit in some rare 6-12 content discussions while they're at it.
Their requests ahead of time were about using Posterous and Examview. On a trip to another local 1:1 school, someone had advocated Posterous, raising their curiosity. Posterous' advantage over blogger and wordpress is the ability to update a blog through email. An advantage for student projects or live blogging, but not really for a teacher's blog. I found a few resources:

Examview is a program for generating assessments that allows you to create variant exams easily, and supports both review and test modes, as well as automatically gathering student data. The resources I found:

- Examview sample question banks. There's one for Michigan. (Not math specific, but I'm assuming at least part of it is math.)

Galois Theory
While I was procrastinating on revising M208 stuff I explored new mathematical territory: Galois Theory. What have I discovered sofar?
- In between the fields Q and R there is another ( perhaps hypothetical field ) called A, the field of algebraic numbers. It contains of all quotients plus all numbers that are solutions to polynomial equations with coefficients in Q. For example Sqrt(2) is not a quotient but can be expressed as the solution of the equation x^2-2=0. So A is equal to Q plus all numbers like Sqrt(2).
- Something very interesting happens if we add ( adjoin ) Sqrt(2) to Q: Q remains a field! ( The field Q is an abelian group for + and *, the operations + and * are related via the distributive laws. Identities are 0 for + and 1 for * ). It can be proved trivially that { x | x = a + b*Sqrt(2) , a,b in Q } is a field. This field is written like Q(Srt(2)), or Q/(X^2-2) and is called an extension field.
- If we put on our Linear Algebra glasses we could say that a + b*Sqrt(2) is in fact a vector (a,b) over the basis {1, Sqrt(2)}.
- The roots of the equation X^2-2 have a C2 symmetry, the roots of X^3-2 have a Dihedral Group 3 symmetry. Investigating the symmetry of the roots of equations is a task in Galois Theory. The symmetry group is called the Galois Group, Gal(E/F). In our example E=Q(Sqrt(2)) and F=Q.
- Now the Fundamental Theory of Galois Theory ( FTGT ) says that there is a 1-to-1 correspondence between subgroups of Gal(E/F) and fields intermediate E and F.
Fascinating stuff. Unfortunately Galois Theory is not part of any Open University course I know of.

M208 is done.
A rather dark side of my personality manifested itself the last two months or so. Don't worry I killed the monster. I sort of digressed to the period when I was in high school, i.e. I did not send my work on TMAs 6 and 7 to my tutor since I more or less had it with that reptilian. Goodbye wished for, hoped for distinction. More about this in another post. In this post I'll report about the exam itself.
The exam took place in The Hague. I counted four people coming in doing M208 but there could have been more. In the examination room with about 16 or so people I have seen at least three different sets of papers of which S320 was one. It was mentioned that two people did not show up. When we entered the room we got our papers and could choose a place to work for ourselves.
At 2.30 PM ( local time ) we were allowed to open the paper. Same format as MS221, i.e. two parts A and B. Part A had 12 questions with a maximum score of 70. And Part B was a 2 out of 5 set. We could choose two questions of 15 points each. From what I recall the questions in part A were about ( not in order ):
1. Graph of (2x+3) / (3-x), incl. asymptotes and axes-intercepts.
2. Solving an inequality.
3. Diagonalizing a matrix using eigenvectors.
4. Question about [{1,2,4,9,10,12}, mult mod 13]
5. Question about Homomorphism z->|z|^2.
6. Question involving R2 geometry using vectors and inner product
7. Question on series
8. Finding an integral
9. Question on a Taylor series
10. Question about permutations
11. Question about the symmetry group of the pentagon.
12. ( Forgotten )
At 4.30 I had completed 9 out of 12 questions. Last year with MS221 I continued working on part A with the result that I only completed half of a question of part B. I think it was a correct decision. I had three questions left which would take me at least 40 minutes, leaving 20 minutes for part B. I could score 18 max. Continuing with part B at this point gave me an opportunity to collect 30 points although part B questions are somewhat more difficult.
I was getting tired and somewhat stresssed. Again, I did not complete all 12 questions in 2 hours. I did not take time to read all five questions. I started to work on question 13 which was on group theory.
13. A question about some finite group with 16 elements. The Cayley Table was given, nothing else.
- Find a cyclic subgroup, call it H.
- Prove that H is normal and that group K ( given ) is not normal.
- List elements of quotient qroup G/H
- Determine the structure of the group.
- ( One more question, forgotten )
It was now 17.00, I chose the next question on Linear Algebra
14. About a linear transformation in R3.
- Find the dimension of the kernel
- What is the geometry of the kernel
- Find a basis of the image
- What is the geoemtry of the image and find an equation
- Given two sets of 3equations with 3 unknowns determine the number of solutions
I feel about the same as last year with MS221. I am fairly sure ( 99% ) of a pass.
All in all, I have learned a lot this year. About mathematics of course, but also about myself and about the effect a study like this can have on a person. Not everything has been said about this study year. More next time.

Practice Problems
I'm trying to shift towards standards based grading (SBG) this semester for the content grade in my geometry class, and so I'm paying a lot of attention to the kinds of problems I write. My tendency is to write big, open, sprawling problems that cross many standards, but I haven't yet worked out how to do that and SBG. I know that I want problems where students can show understanding without necessarily getting to a correct answer. Mathematicians are wrong a lot. What distinguishes us, I think, is that we often know whether we are wrong or right.
My students asked to have the time before the test to practice, instead of the book group I wanted to do. (110 min class and a 1 hour exam.) Very reasonable. But that meant that I had to come up with practice problems! I'll post those now, then the test when all students have taken it.

Try your choice of the following problems. Look for problems that allow you to problem solve and share your thinking.
Which standards could you demonstrate on which problems?
1) Connect each side property to an angle property and draw a different polygon to match each pair.
Draw 3 different connections and try again!
2) Sometimes quadrilaterals are defined by their diagonals rather than by sides and angles. Determine which quadrilateral goes with which definition below, and make your argument. If no quadrilateral goes with a definition, state why.
a. Diagonals both bisect each other.
b. At least one diagonal bisects the other.
c. Diagonals are equal length.
d. Diagonals are perpendicular.
e. Diagonals do not intersect.
f. Diagonals are perpendicular bisectors.
3) On our Area on a Grid class workshop, find the areas of the shapes using formulas.

4) On graph paper, divide a square up into exactly 7 triangles with as many different triangle types as possible. Can you get all 7 types?

a) Make an area formula for a trapezoid, or prove the one you know, using the formulas for rectangles and triangles.
b) Make an area formula for a kite.
c) Make an area formula for a chevron, using the diagonal lengths.
6) On graph paper, find squares with areas listed or argue why you can’t: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
a. Note: 5 is possible.
b. Find the edge length for each square you found using the Pythagorean Theorem. What do you notice?
7) Draw a 2 circle Venn diagram with the labels only in your mind (eg. a line of symmetry and at least one pair of parallel sides). Write in the quadrilateral types where they go, and give to a tablemate to figure out the labels.

കുട്ടികളില് ശാസ്ത്രാവബോധം, ജിജ്ഞാസ, സര്ഗ്ഗാത്മക വാസന എന്നിവ വളര്ത്തുകയെന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ കേന്ദ്രശാസ്ത്രസാങ്കേതിക വകുപ്പിന്റെ മേല്നോട്ടത്തില് ദേശീയ ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ് ഈ വര്ഷം ഡിസംബര് 27 മുതല് 31 വരെ നടക്കുന്നു. ഈ വിവരം അധ്യാപകരുമായി പങ്കുവെക്കുന്നത് പറവൂര് എസ്.എന്.വി ഹയര്സെക്കന്ററി സ്ക്കൂളിലെ ലെ ശാസ്ത്ര അധ്യാപകനും OSST അംഗവും ഫിസിക്സ് അധ്യാപകന് എന്ന പേരിലുള്ള ശാസ്ത്രബ്ലോഗ് കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഞങ്ങളുടെ സുഹൃത്തുമായ സി.കെ ബിജു മാഷാണ്. ഈ വിവരങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം അദ്ദേഹം അയച്ചു തന്ന ഒരു പ്രസന്റേഷനും താഴെ നല്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. എന്താണ് ഈ ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ്? നേരത്തേ ഇതേപ്പറ്റി കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ? ഇതൊരു ശാസ്ത്ര പ്രതിഭാ മത്സരമോ പരീക്ഷയോ അല്ല. 5 കുട്ടികളും ഒരു ടീച്ചര് ഗൈഡും ചേര്ന്ന് മാസങ്ങള് കൊണ്ട് പ്രത്യേക വിഷയത്തില് പ്രൊജക്ട് നടത്തുന്നു. ആ പ്രവര്ത്തനത്തിന്റെ അവതരണം ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസില് നടത്തുന്നു. കുട്ടിക്ക് പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള് സ്വയം ചെയ്തു നോക്കുന്നതിനും, ക്ളാസ്സിലെ മുഷിപ്പന് പഠന രീതിയ്ക്ക് മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നതിനുമെല്ലാം ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ് അവസരം നല്കുന്നു. ഒപ്പം ഭൌതികവും സാമൂഹികവുമായ ചുറ്റുപാടുകളെക്കുറിച്ച് നേരിട്ട് പഠിക്കാനുള്ള അവസരവും, ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഭാവിയെക്കുറിച്ച് സ്വപ്നങ്ങള് കാണാനുള്ള സാധ്യതകളുമെല്ലാം കുട്ടിക്ക് ലഭിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ദേശീയതല സംഗമത്തിനു മുമ്പേ സംസ്ഥാന തലത്തിലും ജില്ലാതലത്തിലുമുള്ള സമ്മേളനങ്ങള് നടക്കും. ദേശീയതലത്തില് പങ്കെടുക്കാന് കേരളത്തില് നിന്നും 16 ടീമുകള്ക്കാണ് സെലക്ഷന് ലഭിക്കുക. അവര്ക്ക് (16 x 5 = 80 പേര്ക്ക് ) ഗ്രേസ് മാര്ക്കായി 74 മാര്ക്കും ലഭിക്കും. എന്നാണ് ഈ മത്സരങ്ങള് നടക്കുക? കൂടുതല് വിവരങ്ങള് അറിയണമെന്നില്ലേ?സംസ്ഥാനതല ബാലശാസ്ത്രകോണ്ഗ്രസ് നവംബര് അവസാനവാരം കൊല്ലത്ത് വച്ചാണ് നടക്കുക. എറണാകുളം ജില്ലാതലബാലശാസ്ത്രകോണ്ഗ്രസ് ഒക്ടോബര് 30 ന് GBHSS ആലുവയില് വച്ച് നടക്കും. മറ്റു ജില്ലകളിലെ ബാലശാസ്ത്രകോണ്ഗ്രസുകളെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള വിശദ വിവരങ്ങള് അതാത് സയന്സ് ക്ലബ്ബ് സെക്രട്ടറിമാരില് നിന്നും അറിയാം. 1993 ല് ഡല്ഹിയില് വച്ചാണ് ദേശീയ ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ്സ് ആരംഭിച്ചത്. ഇത് 18- ാമത് ദേശീയ ബാലശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ്സാണ്. എല്ലാ വര്ഷവും മുടങ്ങാതെ നടന്നു പോരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ എല്ലാ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളില് നിന്നും കേന്ദ്ര ഭരണ പ്രദേശങ്ങളില് നിന്നും ഉള്ള 10 മുതല് 17 വയസുവരെ പ്രായമുള്ള 600 ല്പരം കുട്ടികള് പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യന് പൌരത്വമുള്ള 10 മുതല് 17 വയസ്സ് വരെ പ്രായമുള്ള കുട്ടികളടങ്ങിയ ഗ്രൂപ്പിന് ഇതില് പങ്കെടുക്കാം. 2 പേര് മുതല് 5 പേര് വരെയുള്ള അംഗങ്ങളായിരിക്കണം ഒരു ഗ്രൂപ്പിലുണ്ടാകേണ്ടത്. ജൂനിയര് വിഭാഗത്തില് (Junior Group) ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞ കുട്ടിക്ക് 10 വയസ്സ് പൂര്ത്തിയാകണം, ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കൂടിയ കുട്ടിയ്ക്ക് 14 വയസ്സ് പൂര്ത്തിയാകാന് പാടില്ല. സീനിയര് വിഭാഗത്തില് (Senior Group) ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കുറഞ്ഞ കുട്ടിക്ക് 14 വയസ്സ് പൂര്ത്തിയാകണം, ഏറ്റവും പ്രായം കൂടിയ കുട്ടിയ്ക്ക് 17 വയസ്സ് പൂര്ത്തിയാകാന് പാടില്ല. ഗ്രൂപ്പിന് ഒരു ഗൈഡ് (Guide) വേണം. സ്കൂളിലെ ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രാധ്യാപകനോ അധ്യാപികയോ ആകാം. അതല്ലെങ്കില് ഇത്തരത്തിലുളള ഒരു അന്വേഷണാത്മക പ്രോജക്ട് (investigatory project) തയ്യാറാക്കുന്നതിന് മേല്നോട്ടം വഹിക്കാന് കഴിവുള്ള ഒരു വിദഗ്ധന് ആകാം. എന്നാല് കുട്ടികളുടെ മാതാപിതാക്കളോ അടുത്ത ബന്ധുക്കളോ ഗൈഡ് ആകാന് പാടില്ല. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ ജില്ലാ കോ-ഓര്ഡിനേറ്റര്മാരുടേയും സംസ്ഥാന കോ-ഓര്ഡിനേറ്ററുടേയും മക്കള് ദേശീയ ബാല ശാസ്ത്ര കോണ്ഗ്രസ്സില് പങ്കെടുക്കാന് പാടില്ലെന്നും നിബന്ധനയുണ്ട്.

കേരളത്തിലെ പൊതുവിദ്യാലയങ്ങളിലെ അധ്യാപകരേയും വിദ്യാര്ഥികളേയും പ്രധാനമായും ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചുള്ളതായതിനാലാണ് കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഇത് മലയാളത്തില് തയ്യാറാക്കുന്നതെന്നും ഇതിന്റെ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വേര്ഷന് നമ്മുടെ അടുത്ത സ്വപ്നങ്ങളിലൊന്നാണെന്നും മറുപടിയും കൊടുത്തു. പിന്നീട് വന്ന മെയിലിന്റെ കൂടെ, അദ്ദേഹം ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ ചില ജിയോജെബ്രാ ഫയലുകള് കൂടി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ചത്തീസ്ഘഢിലെ ഭിലായിയില് ഗവ.ഹയര്സെക്കന്ററി അധ്യാപകനാണെന്നും (അവിടെ 9,10,11,12 ക്ലാസ്സുകള് ഒറ്റ യൂണിറ്റാണ് - സെക്കന്ററി), മെക്കാനിക്കല് എഞ്ചിനീറിങ്ങില് ബിരുദധാരിയായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ പ്രണയം ഗണിതത്തോടാണെന്നും വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നൂ അടുത്ത മെയില്. പിന്നത്തെ ആഴ്ച ഫോണില് നേരിട്ടു വിളിച്ച് ഏറെനേരം സംസാരിച്ചു. ഐടി വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ രംഗത്ത്, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ഐസിടി രംഗത്ത് കേരളത്തിന്റെ കുതിച്ചുചാട്ടത്തെ ഏറെ പ്രകീര്ത്തിച്ച സഞ്ജയ്, നിര്ഭാഗ്യവശാല് തന്റെ സംസ്ഥാനം ഉണരാന് തുടങ്ങുന്നതേയുള്ളൂവെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.
എന്നാല് ഇതൊന്നുമല്ല, അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് അത്ഭുതമായി തോന്നിയത്! ദേശീയതലത്തില് എട്ടാംക്ലാസ്സുകാര്ക്കായി നടത്തപ്പെടുന്ന NTSE പരീക്ഷയില് കഴിഞ്ഞവര്ഷം പ്രതിമാസം 500 രൂപയുടെ സ്കോളര്ഷിപ്പ് നേടിയവരുടെ ഗണത്തില് കേരളത്തില് നിന്നുള്ള കുട്ടികളെ മഷിയിട്ടുനോക്കിയിട്ടും കാണാനില്ലത്രെ! പ്രതിഭാധനരായ കേരളത്തിലെ അധ്യാപകര് എന്തേ ഇക്കാര്യത്തില് വേണ്ടത്ര ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാത്തതെന്ന അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ചോദ്യത്തിനു മുന്നില്, അതുവരെ മുഴച്ചുനിന്നിരുന്ന അഭിമാനത്തിന്റേയും അഹങ്കാരത്തിന്റേയും ഊതിവീര്പ്പിച്ച ബലൂണ് കാറ്റഴിഞ്ഞുപോയി. മറുപടിവാക്കുകള്ക്കുവേണ്ടിയുള്ള തപ്പിത്തടയല് ശ്രദ്ധയില് പെട്ടിട്ടാകണം, ഈ ബ്ലോഗിലൂടെ കുട്ടികള്ക്കാവശ്യമായ മാര്ഗ്ഗനിര്ദ്ദേശങ്ങള് നല്കാമെന്ന, വര്ഷങ്ങളായി ഇതിന്റെ പരിശീലനപരിചയമുള്ള, സഞ്ജയിന്റെ വാഗ്ദാനം. (അല്ലെങ്കിലും, പ്രതിഭാധനന്മാര് എന്നും നമ്മെ തേടിയെത്തിയത് യാദൃശ്ചികമായിട്ടായിരുന്നു. ഫിലിപ്പ് മാഷ്, ഉമേഷ് സാര്, റെസിമാന്, അഞ്ജന, കണ്ണന്,...തുടങ്ങിയവരെല്ലാം!)
ഈ വര്ഷത്തെ NTSE പരീക്ഷയ്ക്ക് മൂന്നുഘട്ടങ്ങളാണുള്ളത്. സംസ്ഥാനതലത്തില് എസ്.സി.ഇ.ആര്.ടി നടത്തുന്ന എഴുത്തുപരീക്ഷയെന്ന കടമ്പ കടന്നിട്ടുവേണം അടുത്ത ഘട്ടങ്ങളിലേക്ക് പോകാന്. സെപ്റ്റംബര് 15നകം അപേക്ഷിക്കണം. ഇന്ന് 10-10-10 10:10:10 മാജിക് ഡേ
2010 ലെ പത്താം മാസത്തിലെ പത്താം തിയതിയായ ഇന്ന് പത്തുകളുടെ അപൂര്വ്വ സംഗമദിനം. പറഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴേ കാര്യം മനസ്സിലായിക്കാണുമല്ലേ? ഇന്നത്തെ തീയതിയെങ്ങനെയാ എഴുതുന്നത്? 10-10-10 എന്നല്ലേ? പകല് 10 മണി 10 മിനിറ്റ് 10 സെക്കന്റ് ആകുമ്പോഴോ? ആറ് പത്തുകളുടെ അപൂര്വ്വ നിര തന്നെ നമുക്ക് കാണാം. ഡിജിറ്റല് ക്ലോക്കുകളില് 10:10:10 10-10-10 എന്ന് തെളിയുന്നത് ഒന്ന് സങ്കല്പ്പിച്ചു നോക്കൂ. എത്ര രസകരം അല്ലേ? നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില് ഈ ദിവസവും ഒരു സാധാരണദിനമായി കടന്നു പോകുമെങ്കിലും ചില രാജ്യങ്ങള് ഇത്തരം അപൂര്വ്വ ദിനങ്ങള് നന്നായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. ഉദാഹരണത്തിന് നമ്മുടെ അയല്രാജ്യമായ ചൈനയില് ഈ ദിനങ്ങള്ക്ക് വലിയ പ്രാധാന്യമാണ്. 08-08-08 08:08:08 ന് ഒളിമ്പിക്സ് ചടങ്ങുകള്ക്ക് തിരിതെളിച്ച് അവരത് വലിയൊരു ആഘോഷമാക്കിയത് നാം ജീവിതകാലത്ത് മറക്കുമോ? എങ്ങനെയെല്ലാമാണ് ലോകജനത ഇത് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്?പത്തിന്റെ ഈ അപൂര്വ്വ സമ്മേളനം ഓര്മ്മിക്കപ്പെടാനാകും വിധം വിവിധ ചടങ്ങുകള്ക്കായി തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്നവരുണ്ട്. വിദേശരാജ്യങ്ങളില് പലരും ദിവസത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകത കണക്കിലെടുത്ത് വിവാഹത്തിനായി ഈ വര്ഷത്തെ ഒക്ടോബര് പത്ത് തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരിക്കുകയാണത്രേ. ഇതിനു പിന്നില് പലര്ക്കും ജ്യോതിഷവിശ്വാസങ്ങള് കൂടിയുണ്ടെന്നു പറയുമ്പോള് പലരും മൂക്കത്ത് വിരല് വെക്കും.
വരട്ടെ, വിശ്വാസത്തിന്റെ പോക്കിനെപ്പറ്റി ഇനിയും കേള്ക്കണോ? ഇന്ന് സിസേറിയനുകള്ക്കുള്ള സമയം പോലും 10:10 തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത് കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നവരുണ്ടെന്നു പറയുമ്പോഴോ? ഈ സമയത്ത് ജനിക്കുന്നവര് ജീവിതത്തില് കൃത്യനിഷ്ഠയുള്ളവരും പ്രശസ്തരുമായി മാറുമെന്നാണത്രേ ജ്യോതിഷപ്രവചനങ്ങള്. ഈ ദിവസത്തിന്റെ വിശ്വാസങ്ങള്ക്കു പിന്നില് യാതൊരു അടിസ്ഥാനവുമില്ലായിരിക്കാം. പക്ഷേ സംഖ്യകളുടെ ഈ ആവര്ത്തനം ഒരു അവിസ്മരണീയത പ്രദാനം ചെയ്യുന്നില്ലേ? നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില് വാഹനങ്ങള്ക്കു പിന്നാലെ ഫാന്സി നമ്പര് തെരഞ്ഞു പോകുന്നവരും ഈ അവിസ്മരണീയത കൊതിക്കുന്നില്ലേ?
അടുത്ത വര്ഷം 11-11-11 ഉം 2012 ല് 12-12-12 കഴിയുമ്പോള് 13 നോടുള്ള ഭയം നിമിത്തമാണോന്നറിയില്ല പിന്നീട് ഈ ദിനഭംഗി കാണാന് കുറേ നാളുകൂടി കാത്തിരിക്കണം. 2020 ല് 22-2-22 വരുന്നത് വരെ.
വാല്ക്കഷണം: നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില് ഈ സംഖ്യാകളുടെ അപൂര്വ്വനിര ആഘോഷിക്കാന് തുടങ്ങിയാല് ആ ആഘോഷം പല ഷോപ്പുകളുടേയും മുന്നിലെ ആള് നിര കൂട്ടാന് ഉപകരിക്കുമെന്നും അതുവഴി പല കോര്പ്പറേഷനുകള്ക്കും അന്നേ ദിവസം വരുമാനം കൂടുന്നതിനും ഒരു സാധ്യതയില്ലേ?
