Mathematics in Playground

Students of grade 10 performed mathematics experiments in playground on calculating heights and distances using an isosceles right triangle. They used trigonometric ratios in calculating the height of basket ball pole and a building nearby the playground. It is amazing to share that they calculated the values corrected upto 2 decimal places.
  • Firstly, they prepared their isosceles right triangles using a cardboard.
  • They worked in groups and measured the heights of each group member using a measuring tape.
  • They were told to hold t triangle with one edge parallel to the ground with hypotenuse angling up from their eye to the top of the object. They used the hypotenuse as the line of sight and moved backward/forward on the straight line drawn on the level ground, until the top of the object coincides with the top of the hypotenuse of right triangle.

It was altogether an enriching experience for me as a teacher because even in our school days we did not learn by these kinds of real experiments.
