Luddites on Facebook

I tweet, blog, tumbl and I'm trying Facebook for a class this semester. I'm a huge advocate of Wolfram|Alpha and GeoGebra for math. But I'm secretly a Luddite. I only have an emergency cell phone for the car. I text once a month on my iPod just to keep the service, and I only got the iPod because I was trying to figure out how to use the technology in class. (Though I have grown fond of... my precious. Wait, what?)

Calvin College has a January series each year, accompanying a mini-term when students take enrichment classes. The talks are free to attend, some stream, and there are many remote locations at which you can catch the talks. (Around Michigan, across the country, Canada and ... Lithuania?)  Today's speaker was Sherry Turkle. (Talk description, Dr. Turkle's website and infrequent Twitter.) Her new book on technology is Alone Together, which really captures the essence of her talk in a nutshell.

An outline of the problem:
  • Because of mobile devices we can bail out of reality at any time and moreso, we want to.
  • Technology is children's competition for their parent's attention, and now it is their turn to be distracted.
  • It's dangerous when technology's affordances meet our vulnerabilities. For example, if we're lonely, but afraid of intimacy, or so self-critical that we want to construct our own image.
  • Technology can turn distraction into busyness. Interviewed business people discussed being too busy to think or create, and ironically, too busy with communication to communicate.
  • People are comforted by keeping in touch with a lot of people but keeping them at a distance. Technology enables companionship without the burdens of friendship.
  • What was once collegial is now considered an interruption, but this also becomes a rationalization for avoiding real communication.
  • The essential paradox: the world is growing more complex, but - through social media - we're training ourselves to ask simpler and simpler questions.
  • Technology has interfered with the traditional separation process of adolescence. Separating from parents is harder, and forming your own identity in comparison to friends is harder. She captures this with a phrase: "I share therefore I am." Her subjects have made the validation of a feeling part of having it. A side effect of this is reducing people to something you use for your own purposes.
 What's missing and what to do with it?
  • We are not cultivating the ability to be alone.  They are missing the solitude that refreshes and restores. Creativity demands solitude.
  • This may be especially significant for teachers, who now have the burden of teaching students to work independently and how to be alone.
  • We need to be able to discuss the costs of new technology, without over-reacting or condemning critics as Luddites.
  • We need to ask the question: "does it serve our purposes?"
  • There's a tendency for us to oversimplify by assuming maturity of technology, when in reality it is still changing and malleable. In particular, because we grew up with the internet, we assume the internet is grown up.
  • Everything feels like it's about ramping up volume and velocity. Teaching might need to help students be able to slow down, reflect and isolate.
  • The language of addiction is not helpful, because it frames the discussion as addicted or cold turkey. Instead, analyze for how the technology is meeting your purposes.
Privacy
  • Young people have all but given up their right to privacy.
  • Mark Zuckerberg said: "People have really gotten comfortable not only sharing more information and different kinds, but more openly and with more people. That social norm is just something that has evolved over time.  We view it as our role in the system to constantly be innovating and be updating what our system is to reflect what the current social norms are."
  • Intimacy requires privacy.
  • Democracy requires privacy.
Crux of the matter
  • Does the technology encourage us to inappropriately substitute fantasy for reality?
  • She contrasted immersion in a novel, which we know ends, and does not have relationships, with Second Life, where you build a home and can have a sort of imaginary family.
So what did I take from this?

It made me think about some of the progress I've seen with students accepting and participating in group work. I attributed this to shifting school experiences, but maybe it's due as much or more to developing interdependence.  And was my frustration with students not doing homework this past semester in part caused by increasing difficulty in doing individual tasks?

My fear is the ease of distraction making it harder for students to learn to engage.  People texting at stop signs shows the blurred boundaries. How much easier to text or update your status when you're really stuck on a problem?  I don't want all solitude, but I want to help students find a balance.  I'm definitely considering more solitary work as a precursor to group work.  The power of our technology to support discussion and collaboration would have Vygotsky dancing, so I'm not giving up on it in any way.

I like that Dr. Turkle was against blind opposition, but, rather, in favor of intelligent use.  The problem for me is that I am so different in my use of these things, that it's hard for me to know. My use of Twitter helps me get some insight, though, into the idea of monitoring to see if the tech is serving my purposes.

Bamboo and Mac

Sounds like an awful sitcom... but it should be a killer tech combination.  A colleague and I were discussing how to use a Bamboo tablet to write on pdfs (like scanned student work) on a Mac and I did not know.   First response to questions like that: Twitter.

Why not Google? There was  a Neil Gaiman quote I saw recently: "Google can bring you back 100,000 answers, a librarian can bring you the right one." Well, Twitter is like a few hundred librarians.

So far I've used Jarnal for writing on paper, and the Corel Painter Essentials that came with the board for more serious stuff. (Like my friend's Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation team logo.) The Corel can import images but that would be slooow and big to save. Apple's native Preview has annotation tools, but nothing freehand. No support for math typing. Nice tool suite though, with stickies, side notes, highlighting and direct typing. The edits are visible in other programs that you can use to read pdfs.

@scsocha named Adobe Pro. Obviously great if you have access, which I don't think we do...


I didn't realize Jarnal was a PDF annotator as well, until @bennettscience replied about it.  Before getting the pdf, set your paper (Format > Paper and Background) to plain white. (You can do it afterwords, but Jarnal works page by page so...) You can have multiple windows open at a time... flexible and nice. Playing more with it made me realize that I am not using this program enough. It is a Java application, so it lacks some of the feel of a native Mac program. But it runs multiplatform.


@MitchKeller recommended Skim.  It has great features, including stickies like Adobe Pro. A nice index of annotations. But the notes were only visible in Skim. When I opened in any other program it looked like the original. That doesn't make a lot of sense to me, so I'm probably missing something.  Other than that, the functionality made it Preview Plus, which is a pretty good recommendation.

EDIT: Mitch gives advice in the comments about how he correctly uses Skim for this. "you do have to be sure to export the file as PDF with Embedded Notes and not just save it." Makes sense.


Brian Bennett also suggested Omnidazzle, which was entirely new to me.  Turns out that it is a cursor enhancement program, enabling you to do funky stuff with your cursor, like spread pixie dust or sonar locate. However it also enables you to turn your cursor into a pen to write on screen and a magnifying glass. Won't help for this job, but seems useful for online teaching when you're showing your desktop. Especially the magnifier since Macs can't use the one that all my PC colleagues use.

Sketchbook Express was suggested by @kellyoshea. At first I couldn't get this to download - I got some kind of error about 'not available in US.' Finally opened in App Store (maybe it was trying to use iTunes before?) Good enough for drawing to make me think about the Sketchbook Pro for $60. But... I can't figure out how to open pdfs directly. Undoubtedly you could convert in preview, or screen capture what you want to comment on with Jing or the native ⌘-shift-4 (⌘-shift-3 for the whole desktop), but that's not suitable for heavy use.

Skitch was the last program I checked out; just bought by Evernote, so it works well on mobile devices, too. This is kind of like Jing+ on pictures, - Jing's video features. Definitely the best free screencap program I've used. It has already earned a regular spot in the starting rotation for me. Skitch has an online sharing feature (like Jing/Evernote) or can email directly the image you're making. It can open common image formats, including pdfs, but just shows you the first page.  It can export to pdf, even starting as a screencap, though.  The easy sharing options might make it worth using for student feedback, though. Skitch runs from the menu bar, which is a nice feature.

This has been fun. I'll definitely play more with Jarnal and Skitch, and test out Sketchbook Express to replace Corel Painter Essentials.

iPad Brainstorming

In general with technology, I think there are few must haves. I much prefer tech that is usable in pieces rather than by wholesale adoption. For example smartphone use vs TI-Inspire. This is written with iPad in mind, but would apply to any tablet computer, I think.

iPads and tablets seem like that kind of technology.  For my school several of us were asked to think about how teachers could use iPads.  Most of the uses involve students having the iPad.  So I thought I would put down what I think of, and then troll for other suggestions in comments. I'm looking for ideas that involve the teacher bringing one iPad into the room. Also if there are ideas to distinguish it from a smartphone or laptop.

Ideas
  1. Give it to students.  Do they need to look something up, compute something, watch a video, capture a video, read a reference text... The larger interface makes it more suitable for group work.
  2. Constructive use of social media in the classroom. Backchannel, Google Groups or Plus, Edmodo, etc. Recently did #mathchat on Twitter with a class and it was a drag bopping back and forth to the classroom computer and taking dictation on class comments. Instead I could have said, "here's the iPad."
  3. Document your experiences to share with students. My colleagues Dave Coffey and Sean Lancaster do this already. Twitter, Evernote and I suppose now Google+. Portability > laptop, interface > smartphone.
  4. Portable reference library. Mobility > laptop, readability > smartphone.
  5. Data collection in class. Check off attendance, notes on student work or participation. Hard to carrry your laptop around to each group, easy to carry iPad. I used to so some of this on a palm but it was quite clunky. Apps for this are developing rapidly. BlackBoard Mobile is being pushed hard and may figure in for GVSU.
  6. Assistive technology. Differentiate your lessons for a student with distinct requirements for access to a lesson. (Spellcheck suggested Assertive Technology - I like that, too.) See for example this post on iPad assistance (via @langwitches on Twitter).
  7. Moves towards paperless workplace. All those meetings where there's handouts for each teacher that move immediately to the recycle bin...
  8. Meta-use: model new technology adoption and integration for your students. By trying out new tech and sharing your process, you are modeling towards their Technological-Pedagogical-Content-Knowledge development (for teachers; see http://www.tpack.org) or the similar structure in other fields.
  9. Who knows? Apps are being developed at a break-neck pace. Putting these devices in teachers hands will expand their capabilities in ways we don't even know because they being created tomorrow. Cf http://www.mobilemouse.com/ that will allow you or students to control the classroom computer from anywhere in the room. There's a dedicated iTunes room for teacher apps now. (Warning iTunes link opens in iTunes.) Quite an opportunity for innovation in scholarship of teaching or even collaboration with the University's own mobile development lab. Or for students who are budding developers.

Antikythera

In the 20th century Alan Turing designed the first truly general purpose computer: The Turing Machine. Charles Babbage ( 1791-1871 ) created his working difference engine and Blaise Pascal ( 1623-1662 ) created the the first desktop calculator. Can it get more mind-blowing than that? I think so.

The Antikythera mechanism is an astronomical computer thought to have been built in 150BC. It was rediscovered on the Antikythera shipwreck in 1900 and has since astounded researchers by its mechanical complexity. It's the oldest known computer, a relic dating back 2000 years and rediscovered at the bottom of the ocean.

TNT: Tech for Novice Teachers

I wanted to gather an overview of tech resources for students, and thought it would be worth posting for everyone.  Nothing completely new, really, but I'd like this to be a good overview.  Please add other relevant resources I overlooked or don't know about in the comments.

New teachers: don't overload!  Subtle shifts.  Look for something that will help you do what you want to do, and slowly incorporate or try out new things.

File storage and sharing:  have something to share with many people or everyone?  There are many free internet services.
  • Dropbox - best for working with colleagues.  Simultaneously shares files and backs them up in the cloud.  Allows you to undo to previous saved versions for up to a month.  Invisibly syncs files on your computer with those in the cloud.
  • Box.net - similar to dropbox without the seamless syncing.  May be better for sharing with the public, though.
  • Scribd - document sharing that you can embed in a blog or other web 2.0 application.  Works with Microsoft Word and PDFs perfectly.
  • Google docs - clearly the best for simultaneous editing and sharing from anywhere.
Presentations:
  • Slideshare - upload powerpoint presentations to embed or share publicly or have available to students and yourself from anywhere.  Embeddable.
  • Prezi - cool graphic-style presentation which is like a dynamic concept map.  You can embed youtube videos, present on or offline, embed the prezi and easily share them.  The editor is suprisingly easy to learn.
  • Glogster - internet posters.  Multimedia possible.  Free to teachers and their students.  Easy enough for quick student projects.
  • Animoto - turn powerpoint files into movies.  A little limited at the free level.  Also easy enough for students.

Math specific:
  • Geogebra - my favorite, bar none.  Geometry, algebra and free.  That's just incredible.  Exports images for use in documents, exports sketches as a dynamic webpages, runs on any platform.  Becuase it's opensource, there's a large library of free resources developed by other teachers.  (Some of my sketches are on this blog.)
  • Wolfram|Alpha - the app/webpage that makes a computer algebra system available to anyone with the internet or a smartphone.  Solve equations, access databases, investigate almost anything quantitative. (Here's my W|A think aloud for a question, but here's a better introduction to Wolfram|Alpha.)
  • Core Plus math tools - free dynamic online applets shared freely from the authors of the Core Plus Mathematics Project curriculum, for algebra, geometry, discrete math and statistics.
  • NRICH - a sortable, searchable problem bank of rich problems for K-16 mathematics from the national maths organization of the United Kingdom.  Updated with new problems monthly.  Many problems accompanied by a dynamic visualization.
  • Virtual Manipulative Library -  good for computer demonstrations, smartboards, and students with internet access.  Some are clunkier than others, but many are quite smooth.
Other Tools
  • Jing - free screen capture software and screen video capture software that allows you to save to your computer or share via their linkable website.  The souped up version is Snag It, and the same company makes Camtasia which is a quite nice movie editing software.
  • Mindomo and Mindmeister - tools for online, sharable concept maps.
  • Social bookmarking - Diigo, StumbleUpon, Delicious
  • Of course, I'm a big fan of twitter and blogging, also.

Don't let me tell you, see for yourself.  (Link goes to Maria's famous Prezi.)  Other suggestions:
  • If you assign a game, can ask them to play to a certain score.  Or post a screenshot of their high score in the discussion board.
  • A good game gets harder as you get better.
  • Look for when the math is the game.  Not just practice.

  • Manga High - several games with good content and game play, and superhigh production values.  I signed up yesterday, and I've already gotten unsolicited emails asking to help me upload students name.
  • Waker - this is a wicked fun game of graphing that also has nice situational problem-solving.  (That's the screenshot at right.)  Compare to Woosh.  (Nice learning experiment: does narrative help? It must, right?)
  • Jane McGonagol on gaming for a better world. (TED)
  •  Support the development of good math games.  Say you'll use them, describe what makes the good ones good.

    Wolfram|Alpha - Maria Anderson
    • Start playing with Wolfram Alpha.  Enter line (1,2) (5,5).  Wow.  Notice what extra information there is.  Maria set us the problem of how to graph a line with a point and a slope.  (Took some work.)
    • How to have students share: best in a chat room, where students can chat the cool entries that they find.  Otherwise can use a discussion board.  An interesting post is that the URL with your result will always bring up that exact same page you saw. Well, with the proviso...
    • Wolfram|Alpha is updated weekly.  If it can't do it now, try next week.
    • Maria's favorite Wolfram Alpha posts.
    • See the data available on a specific topic: here's my town - Grand Haven, nutrition, etymology of a word (Even shows rhymes! But not for orange.)
    • Try comparisons: cities, companies, species (took some clicking on options to get this result), publications, ...
    • Notice or beware that this works on smartphones.  (Goodbye TI)
    • Is W|A skynet?
    Specific Uses
    • Have students use Skynet W|A to factor.  What do they notice? Connections with graphs? Can they generalize?
    • Careful: log(x) means natural log to W|A.  lg(x) means log_10 (x)
    • Find data they are interested in for applications, display, etc.
    • Replace graphing calculators.
    • On assessments, give them the graph or info they would have gotten from W|A.  Now what can they do with it.
    Consider the uses for this.  Maria's example was: you go into a hospital.  A nurse, one of your former students, is calculating a dose.  Do you want her going by memory of what you taught, or using the W|A on her smartphone?   What if the nurses you've taught are at about 70% on average?

    • Free.  Do need to sign up.  Anyone can be a teacher.  Classes have whiteboard (with tools), audio, chat, ...
    • Teacher turns on permissions for students: whiteboard, microphone, etc.
    • Has some basic math symbols in the whiteboard typing.
    • Compare to Elluminate
    • Teacher can turn on screen sharing to show what's on for them.  Very handy with MathXL or ... anything.  Can't chat while sharing a screen.
    • Non-teachers can share screen, but it shows up as a non-resizable window.
    • Can monitor wiziq window and your screen share simultaneously.

    Vyew
    • Many similar features
    • Create a lobby, and then you link students to there.  Vs. creating a new link with each session in Wiziq.
    • Don't have to register, you can just join.
    • Teacher can set status of participants.
    • There's a screen sharing tab, and it doesn't obscure the chat.  (Not sure how the teacher will see the chat without switching back to the vyew window, which will then show itself, infinity, boom. )
    One of the participants recommended DimDim, saying that it integrates well with Moodle.

    My gut reaction is that I'd use  wiziq for one time or infrequent sessions, vyew for a regular gig.  Students could bookmark your lobby, and make it dead easy to connect.

    Presentation Design - Maria Anderson
    Looks like they discussed topic generation, organizing potential slides and ideas with stickies, and the importance of visuals to go with presentation.  Literally a visual for every point.



    Some resources:
    Modes of presentation:
    • Prezi - groovy visual organizer for slides with very flexible positioning and sizing.  Video imbeddable from youtube, or you can upload .flv. 
    • Animoto - turns a slide show into a video with some slick animation and a soundtrack.  Easy to imbed, upload and share.  Big trick: in Powerpoint, save as jpegs, then they will upload directly.  Spotlight images you want for emphasis.  Easiest to add text in PowerPoint.  Can include video.  Sadly, free accounts can only do 30 sec video, but with the educator account, you can give students access to your account.
    • MindomoMindmeister - mindmaps.  (I might have to use Mindmeister just because of the Music Meister.  Who is the Music Meister?)  Mindomo is flash so no iPad or iPhone.  Mindmeister is HTML5, but has slightly fewer features.
    • What mode to choose?  Consider: venue, audience, time, digital or not, and presentation style
    • Venue: tech available? 1 computer per participant? Room setup? In a computer lab, go for interactivity; for example, mind maps.
    • Content: lots of screenshots, consider just powerpoint.  Full frame easy to see images.
    • Completely digital: not very long, just want to get across a clear single point (eg. function notation)
    • Impact: prezi to make a big impact.  Levers of Change was for futurists, and a big wow was wanted.

      Camtasia is better than Jing for long format screencast videos, can record from screen and webcam, and has a fairly robust editor.

      Editing tips
      • Export formats: Quicktime (.mov) for most purposes.  Html creates a webpage with a player and a .swf file, but you need to be able to upload folders to make that work online.
      • Control the speed of actions by  their duration.  Actions are transitions from one set of properties to another set.  About a second as a rule of thumb, effects for a second.  Adjust to make your point.
      • Visual effects have meaning, whether you intend them to, or not.  Fade is the most gentle.  Say instead of a shift of seconds you want a shift of hours.  Use a different effect to make your point.
      • Types of effects are transitions, filters and actions.
      • Smartfocus effect is an action that allows the camera to focus in on where your mouse travels.  Smartfocus only works on Camtasia recordings, as they use extra data that was collected by the program.
      • Filters apply in order.  Sometimes this matters but often it doesn't.  Example:  color adjustment, then colorize is more effective.  On the timeline, you can right-click, copy filters to new objects.
      • Properties gearbox allows access to important information and control.  But most things you can do through other tools.  Exception:  rotations of the input video.
      • Custom video action does nothing by itself, but you can learn to use it to do all the transitions.
      • To change aspect ratio hold down shift while resizing.  Default is to preserve aspect ratio because it's video.
      • Choose canvas size, add effects, organize... but do cuts last.  They are the "most destructive" and the hardest to undo.
      Creating or "Look, Ma, I'm a director!"
      • Scripts are helpful.  Ummm... minimize hesitations and... um.... keep you on flow.
      • Storyboards: not for everyone, but can be very helpful.
      • Instead of cutting a clip to get rid of verbal miscues, you can separate the audio and video, and just cut out the offending audio.  You can also do that to keep audio you want without video.  Cut out a corresponding bit of audio later, and realign the clips.
      • Beware of video-noise.  Use zooms and smartfocus (or the custom action to get that effect).  Arrows to direct attention.  (Turn arrows in the property box rather than rotate them parallel to the clip to make the gradient look right.)  Window Spotlight blurs everything outside of a region set apart by contrast.
      • Camtasia uses "tweening" with actions.  Accelerates them in and decelerates them out, as opposed to having them happen with a constant speed.  Can create some strange effects
        by layering actions.
      Sharing
      • Youtube: Choose Youtube or Youtube HD.  Understand it is going to be shrunken down.  Advantages - well known, great indexing for search, better for attracting followers.
      • Screencast:  can embed from screencast.com (TechSmith's videohosting site.) Advantages - doesn't reencode, so clearer, and more control.  You can password protect it, make collections, only allow access to a single movie, etc.  Screencast is where Jing stores video.
      • Blackboard: might be better to use another sharing option then link.
      • iPhone and iPad: export to .mp4

      Clickers/Classroom Response Systems: with Derek Bruff.  Worthwhile even if you're not using clickers, because of the focus on pedagogy and student activity.
      • Near riot as we discussed: where does most of the mass of a tree come from: a) soil b) air c) water d) sunlight.  "Right answer"= (b) because of carbon.  (I dissent: 
      • Best clicker questions will provoke discussion.  Had a nice teacher move flowchart.
      • Many traditional systems.  Also polleverywhere.com, and ResponseWare's smartphone/web solutions.
      • Math questions like: You were once exactly 3 feet tall.  T/F
      • Can ask with confidence rating.  i.e. Yes - High Confidence, Yes - Low Confidence, No - Low Confidence, No - High Confidence.
      • Conceptual vs. Procedural questions - Both work.  Key question: do answers allow students to work backwards from answers?  (OK if that's intentional.) Can give them steps in the procedure and ask to find the error.

      • Create Time for Telling: make moments that create curiosity and the responses of peers matter to each student.  Then they want you to tell them why or how.  Motivationally they are ready.  Often comes when most of the students are wrong.
      • Can use for peer assessment.  Students are hesitant to publically evaluate someone.

      • Cf. student presentations. Maria records feedback in Jing and gives video feedback.  By the rubric that students have up front.
      • These projects had beneficial effects on student performance on other assessments, and definitely addressed 21st century skills.

      Mathematica - PlotFest - Deb Wood

      We experimented with controls in the plotting functions of Mathematica.  Hard for me to attend to because its use is beyond many of my students tech skills, and the classes where it would be appropriate, we use Maple.  Some people are exploring Geogebra instead.  (Obviously, I'm down with that.)

      Resources:
      • Demonstrations from Wolfram, a huge collection of Mathematica Notebooks.  These can be "played" using the free Mathematica player.
      • Training videos that show some of the basic and advanced how-tos.

      Peripheral Tablet/Tablet PC
      • Works well with Windows Journal or OneNote or Jarnal.  (Jarnal's free and open source.)  If you have a tablet PC you might want WinPenPal.
      •  Can use with Jing for helping students on WebAssign or MyMathXL, etc. because...
      • Allows you to quickly write or jot math.  One instructor at the session uses it to give notes, and then just posts the files online. 
      • It is easy to just drag images from wolfram-alpha, the web, or TI-Smartview to include in your handwritten notes.
      Second Life - Evert VanderBerg

      • Free to create your avatar.
      • Download the Second Life viewer.
      • Set the rating of your account: General, Moderate, Mature, Adult.  (Choose wisely.)  Have to live 30 days before you can change more extreme than moderate, or by verifying with a credit card.
      • Avatar names are unique.  Common first names might be used up.
      • Second Life Wiki
      • Evert uses 2ndLife for discussions with people from all over.  Better discussions with sense of close location.  This can change with weird or distracting avatars, so ask your students to 
      • SlideShare pres on Math Ed in 2ndLife
      • Search for freebies or swapmeet, teaching to find free gestures, like pointing.
      • Can upload images, for ten Linden each.  (Cheap but not zero.)
      • Some of the math involved seems just to be in the design and manufacture of the sims.  See this site for example.  There's a free Math Sculptor.
      • Any given moment there are 50-100K users; 2 million active accounts.
      • Sounds like we should look up Janita Collins.

      MCC Math and Tech Workshop

      This week I'm at Maria Anderson's Math and Tech Workshop.  I'll try to update this post as we go through the week.  There's a large Explorers group and I'm in the Adventurer's group.

      Social Media:
      • Use Facebook pages for students.  They like the page and get those updates rather than your updates.
      • Go over privacy settings with your students.  They are often ignorant of the reality. Check your own.
      • Linked In: limited use, like a modern rolodex.
      • Twitter: internet equivalent of drinking from a firehose.
      • Twitter is more collegial.  Follow people who have worthwhile info to you, get nearly instantaneous feedback, hashtags to organize.
      • Twapper Keeper (love that) to archive tweets.
      • Twitter is a completely public space.
      • Math Blogs: a node on Maria's MindMap of Spicing Up Mathematics

      Finally got time to play with Scratch.  I'm wondering about it as an activity directly for students, for preservice teachers, or as an instructional design tool to make activities.  Here's my first - kind of like pidgin Logo.

      The end of the afternoon is working on Mathematica. It has developed quite a bit in the 15 years since I've last used it!
